Rally sample agenda?

Post by Paulie » Fri Jun 26, 2015 8:45 pm

So, having just joined Taxi in March I really want to go to the Rally this year. My wife and I met in music school, so she's hip to the lingo, if you dig. ;-)

But, to convoke her that I should use my frequent flyer miles for both of us to go the Rally versus putting them toward a family vacation might be a bit tough. Can anyone share a sample agenda for the three days worth of clinics? I'd like to make sure she has topics she can attend, or at least give her an idea of what will be covered. Feel free to PM me, or post here if that's cool.

I'll be there, the question is whether I'm flying solo or not. :-)

The details of RR 2014 are still online

One of the biggest problems for the Rally is figuring out what to go to, as there are so many good things happening at once.

Paul,

Like many professional meetings, IMO, at least half of what happens at the Rally is after the sessions end.

People have a meal together, hang out in the lounge together, talk about what they heard during the day and the sessions they attended.

I have noticed over the years, that the folks who attend the Rally with their spouse or significant other, miss most of this stuff because after a day of attending meetings, they feel they need to redirect their attention to their spouse. (and rightfully so)

This is a relationship business, and at the Rally, one never knows when they will meet someone who will have a profound influence on their career.

I want to be at the Rally with 100% of my attention to relationship building and moving forward in my career. My wife Robin understands this . She has never attended the Rally with me, and probably never will.

Yet, on the other hand, Robin knows, and has met 25 to 30 of my TAXI friends. (many who live in other parts of the country) .

Because my focus has been on building relationships, my TAXI friends have met Robin because they have been to my house, or we have been to their home. (including staying with one of my friends I met at the Rally at his home in the UK)

This approach has worked for me. Other people have a different perspective on the subject.

I attended my first Rally with my wife. Like Chuck said, it is true, that I didn't do quite as much "networking" as I did at my second attendance two years later. Sure I think the "spending time with my spouse" was part of it. I'm sure being in the wrong time zone and crashing at 8 or 9pm every night then waking at 3am at that first Rally had something to do with it too. And not knowing many people. And as I think about it, having my wife there made it easier to NOT meet people because I had the crutch of someone familiar to hang with.

Last year I went to the Rally sans-spouse. And I also came to LA about a week early to visit friends and family and to acclimate myself to the time change. I networked MUCH more at that Rally. Of course I knew MANY more people by this time. And the people I knew introduced me to MANY more people. Ah ah! THAT's NETWORKING!

At the first Rally, my wife attended classes that I didn't, and shared her notes. I think being at the Rally pumped her up for this career of mine as much as it did me. This year, we have plans for her to attend with me. Luckily my wife is very understanding and independent, so my attention to her that weekend isn't going to be a quota that needs filling. We will see how the networking goes this time.

My mom attended all the Rallys I've been to except my first. She had a guest pass, she could go to any class or ballroom panel if she wanted but I think she really just enjoyed being in a nice hotel, sitting by the pool, and being part of this enormously friendly event. I would be distracted and busy during the rally, lol, so we always did a couple of days in Santa Barbara or San Fran afterwards as part of the trip. I really appreciated how great my Taxi friends were at including a non-musical octogenarian in their 'networking', *grin.

It may come down to cases; my wife is extremely organized and personable, (she's also completely stunning, as you'd expect) and WAY more interested in other people than I am, and I can't wait to bring her to a Rally, because she doesn't quite get this Taxi thing, but...she's quick on the uptake, and you could say she has an interest, so I want to add her to my team. (she's been looking for a post-retirement project) Sadly, that'll have to wait for next year.
