Come dog pile my first EDM track ever :)

I cranked this out after Taxi TV tonight. Looking for any feedback, mixing, patch selection, form, etc. I've been at it for several hours and I'm sure I will come back to listen in the morning and say "what the hell was I thinking?" :)

Let 'er rip.

Forgot to post the listing. The key sentence for me is "Please submit full-length, heart-pounding EDM Instrumentals that are rhythmically engaging, with a more dramatic quality than the fun, “happier” EDM you might normally hear."
DRAMATIC, ELECTRONIC DANCE INSTRUMENTALS at 140 BPM are needed by a Hollywood Music Supervisor for a NON-Exclusive Placement in a star-studded, Big Budget Feature Film. They need high-energy, Up-Tempo EDM Instrumentals that could be found on the same playlist as acts like Tiesto, Solarstone, Bushi, etc., etc., etc. Take a listen to the following references to get yourself in the general ballpark:

“Adagio For Strings” by Tiesto:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84RzevpicAw

“Please” by Solarstone:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWZU96rbhLw

“23 Kisses (Trance Arts Remix)” by Bushi:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8dO4Xu2IX0

Please submit full-length, heart-pounding EDM Instrumentals that are rhythmically engaging, with a more dramatic quality than the fun, “happier” EDM you might normally hear. A simple but memorable melody should work best. Your Track’s structure should be typical of the genre, building as it develops and moves forward, then breaking back down, building again, etc., etc., etc. Your submissions should be at least 3 minutes in length.

TAXI TIP: They specifically need your Instrumentals to be 140 BPM to match the pace of the scene, which has already been edited to that tempo. Anything above or below 140 BPM will NOT work for this pitch!

Do NOT copy or rip off the referenced artists or tracks in any way shape or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

The estimated license fee for this is $500, depending on the ultimate placement. This is a Non-Exclusive, Direct-to-Music Supervisor pitch, so you’ll keep 100% of the sync fee and your Master and Publishing rights, plus you’ll also get 100% of any applicable performance royalties. You must own or control the Master Recording and Copyright to pitch for this opportunity. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis. No full critiques. Please submit 1-3 Instrumentals no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Tuesday, June 30, 2015. TAXI #U150630ED

Hey Paulie, nice track. I think you need WAY more kick drum in the mix.
That would add to the drama that they are looking for.
I would also consider not starting with the beats at the beginning, let it build before your beats come in,
and when the beats/kick comes in really MAKE it SLAM! Gosh that sounds almost violent, doesn't it??? ha ha

That'll be 2 cents :)

Thanks Diane!Just updated it, check out the link again and let me know if there's more bass drum. I doubled it, used a different kick for the second one and pumped up the volume. (so much so that it may have been causing my headphones to crackle). :)

heya Paul

I checked it out. This whole feel of this vibe is late 80's. Maybe mid to late 80's like Flashdance or Footloose (not the particular songs, just the music in those movies).

Modern EDM is geared toward solo lines, and even most backing chords in modern EDM sound like solo lines. Modern EDM is very percussive. PLUS anything that is a "pad" or "long chord" is HUGE and very complex. Your sounds are pretty soft in that manner.

The melodies in your song are also very late 80's. I would really suggest you spending a lot of time... oh say... a week, listening to nothing but the referenced artists.
I've also heard that THC helps the brain built neuro pathways when listening to music so that the style becomes "built into" the brain. (dunno where I've heard that... and I'm sticking to that story) but if that's not your style, listening to the a'las for a week steady and NO OTHER music... should do the trick.

Hope I'm not to harsh, I love seeing people branch out and taste new genres.

Keep on Keeping on.

Hi Pauly,

Really good. I like the balance/ music production between the parts.

Not sure that I'm a fan of the timbre of the kick, and the flappy/ snare bit.... too strong? Not for EDM??

Aside from that sounds great.

French/ European sounding??

Regards
Rebecca

Re the dog pile.... when I first saw that I thought it may have been reference to previous postings on the vomitus of the canine species and the dietary requisition of said expulsion. lol
There seems to be a bit of that around here!! :)

Great feedback folks! At some point you have to jump out of the nest and give it a shot. I've got a long way to go...

Russell, you are spot on re: the 80s vibe. When listening today I kept hearing a Flashdance or Axel F thing, couldn't shake it. I need to work on learning Rounds so I can have a more current sound pallet. I've just started listening to EDM when I go running (which I need to do more often). So instead, I've been stalking a few Taxi member sound cloud pages to listen to reference tracks and analyze forms. Kleptophonica is one of the tracks I checked out today. :) JimC has an awesome library, as well as TheElement. So much to learn, so little time... if only I didn't have to sleep, eat, and socialize with my wife and kids.

I'll have to pass on the THC and stick with caffeine... usually a visit to the local coffee hang (not the Seattle super chain) for a nice latte with some sugar free vanilla. 8-)

Hey Paulie,

I would change the snare build. You can build your own or just use a snare build from a sample pack.

This sounds a lot like trance. I like the melody lines. They are cool.

Nice arp. very trance.

I would add a trance lead layer to bring out the melody more. builds intensity.

Yeah this is definitely trance. Great stuff. but replace that snare build. also you can add some riser also with the snare build. check out reFx Vengeance Ultimate Fills vol 1, 2 and 3 they have some great builds.

I use a vst called The Riser for the riser part now but sometimes grab a snare build sample. sounds good and it works well.

oh also the kick. its ok. it works. there are so many kicks out there. samples by the ton. I used to use samples but now just using KICK vst. A lot of edm producers use it. I sounds great. so many great kicks to choose from. you can change out the top kick and also tune the kick to key of song very easily. tuning the kick helps the kick and bass work together instead of messing with frequencies which can happen in the low end. of course always sidechain as well.

I don't understand half of what the previous posters are talking about, but thought I'd tell you I liked the track. Ott

paulie paulie...
i'm so happy for you

your getting into it.. good for you.

i think flexing a little edm is good for your soul..

yes i see that you dropped by my soundcloud quite a bit  ..and i'm very glad to give back to someone.. :)

i've been so blessed to have a few electronic taxi members help me out with there skill and feedback..
i dont forget edm taxi bros

for my thoughts.. your sounds are dated (as russ said) and you will to address that first.
there are so many things to talk about but that should be your top focus..

to start out get your self any "vengeance" soundset with a good variety kicks in every key and
lots of starter processed snares, risers and sounds..

russ has lots of good info and stay away fromt the thc or you wont remember any of this..lol

gavin has lots of great ideas too.. but i think you should just get kicks that are done and practice recreating them.
but gavin can tell how to tune a kick adjust the sustain.. run it thru a flux capacitor and layer it with a top kick generated by a 2k butt slap recorded from iphone at subway station.. or you just use a kick that sounds correct and move on to make a cool edm track ( not offense gavin ) you are awsome

but thats just me.. i'm not an expert at all..

this to me is a great place to start from what i hear..
you should not use these sounds FYI for your finale productions just use them to guide you
as a template to create your own..

your snare sample was text book 1980's roland 707 eww dry.. and the kick was rough too.. but you knew that i bet..
after you really listen to those reference tracks .. you will need to find out how to do that..
you gotta start somewhere.. i think you will rock

musically and theory wise your skills are there and that will be a very strong resource
you have plenty of talent to achieve competitive music in this genre..

hope i wasn't to brutal, i'm really glad to help..
