The first time I used them was on my Takamine 12 string (Elixer lights) while touring.
I was sold from the beginning, went from changing my strings weekly (Guild Phosphor Bronze)
To... only when I broke one! :D
Now they are on all of my acoustics and mandolins
Haven't looked back!
Ah... another consideration Cass brings up: do you beat up your strings?... play 'em brutally?
Use heavy or thin pick; finger picks; go pick-less? Play with your teeth? Toes?
Strings last for me cause I don't break em.

If you're gonna change string weights, you may need to see how it will affect the fit at the nut.
Just something to consider.

I used to have a big beautiful Guild 12 string and I used light gauge strings . they worked for me

I would think that if you haven't found the set you like yet then pick a brand
Try their light bronze and also buy a medium set as well.
Give them each 3 weeks

Put on the light set. Play and assess the sound and feel. Record something
Change the strings to the medium set . Play and assess the feel again.

It's all up to you to choose.

Hey there, jimc:
Here's a little fun with strings... no strings attached; :? 8-)
one of my favorite young singer/songwriter/musician artists;
often paired up with local prodigy, fiddler John Mailander.
Here's a bit of Molly, tearing up her Martin.

I use a set of 11 gauge Elixir Phosphor Bronze on my Martin. I use 10s on my electric gtrs, but like to go up a gauge on the acoustic for tone. To my ears the bronze sets are just a little warmer. The Martin had Martin strings on it when I got it, and they weren't bad either. Other than that I also like D'addarios, but I haven't tried the Guild sets.

For recording a bright tone with lots of highs are to be preferred. You can dial it out afterwards, if it doesn't suit the track, but you can't dial it in when you need it, if it's not recorded.

For squeeks, I've comitted crimes before with Fast Fret. It's a life saver.

I've found light elixir strings give me the best sound.

A dreadnought will usually sound its best with medium-gauge Martin Marquis. Phosphor Bronze are a little darker at first, but the tone stays more consistent, post break-in. You'll give up a bit of brightness with the coated varieties, but they do maintain their tone longer. I feel like you get the best tone when you have strings with enough mass to drive the top, but not everyone has hands as manly as mine. (my calluses have calluses)

Lighter strings will NOT make your guitar sound like a Taylor, but you can pick closer to the bridge and apply subtractive EQ and mic positioning to come a little closer. If you want your guitar to sound like a Taylor, better to buy one. It's less frustrating.

I've always played with mediums.. my guitar is a bit worn, i thought a lighter string would help..
i did some research and my guitar came with lights from the factory .. and i'm hoping the guitar wasn't reset
at any time.. i did go for the guild PB brand in the exact size original to the factory, but opted for the coated versions. sounds pretty good so far.. but while i was in Florida recently i fell in love with lightly used Taylor 414... so might just keep the guild for the memories. my player ability level is not much more worthy than that.

2 more pennies for the Sunday offering-plate...
what's important, imho: is that you really, really, really, really like the sound and playability of your guitar...
like, so much that it never has to beg you to play it. You can hardly put it down.
It makes your girl jealous!! :? :) !! Know what I'm sayin'?! :o
Then you'll know you've made the right choice!!
Rock on, jimc. :)
