I pulled in that roadhouse in a stolen Pontiac
Thinkin’ I’d outrun the law a coupla counties back
And that barmaid’s smile was like a treasure trove of pearls
And the beer lights set a blue tiara on her curls

She kept sneakin’ me a lotta sideways glances
And I wished we had some diff’rent circumstances

She came over and sat down when her shift was through
And we traded hard luck tales and drank a beer or two
Told her I was headed to a farm near Wichita
Leaving out that I was being hunted by the law

Even so, she knew I was no Pope Francis
But we figgered we were trapped by circumstances

Someone played a slow song by her fav’rite band
Her gorgeous smile reached out and grabbed my hand
And I said I hadn’t danced in years
But I tried a few steps that were all my own
And it somehow felt like we were all alone
‘stead of in a dive that stunk of smoke and beer

Then I said goodbye and gunned that car for Kansas
Cursing life and luck and both our circumstances

I’m glad Wells Fargo’s money saved my uncle’s farm
It was foolish but at least no one was harmed
And I spent all winter freezing in my uncle’s loft
Hiding out till I was sure the Federal heat cooled off

But you can’t give your all and not take chances
So I thought of fate and choice and circumstances

Borrowed my uncle’s truck and crossed the Kansas line
Slipped inside that roadhouse right at closing time
Dropped some quarters in the jukebox by the bar
Then I turned around and there she was
We didn’t have to say a word because
There are times a slow dance whispers from the heart

And now since that night we’ve shared a thousand dances
Cos it’s our own steps that shape our circumstances
