If in question about a particular genre or what it is "supposed" too sound like, go to a major library and search for indie.....

Great question! Obviously the references in the listings are key, but that's a great suggestion from CHuckmott as well.

Yeah, John, there are so many "indie" sub-genres that it IS really helpful in the TAXI listings to have those reference artists and tracks.

Get a DVR or whatever you can get that'll do it, and slow down the credits of shows that feature music that's in your wheelhouse. From there, you can just google them up, but keep in mind that if you skip the first step and search a genre that just came up first in Google, you don't really have a way to tell which are the best examples.

But it's GREAT ADVICE to go to libraries that you know of and search genres; if you keep it up, you'll eventually get a sense of which libraries serve which markets, which should tell you who you wanna write for.

Wiki usually comes up as one of the first in google searches. It's usually one of the best places to start researching. Especially the notes, and external links at the bottom of the page, but even throughout the page there are links to the sources.
