When I Go

When I Go ©2015 Robert George BMI

There are many thoughts on passing over
And so in this simple song I’m tellin’ mine
Someday up there I hope I see Granpa
With his mandolin and watermelon wine
Though the years may tell me that I’m youthful
Fortune can still call me to an early fate
If my faith deserves to be rewarded
I’m not sure I want to see a pair of pearly gates

Cos I love this land when wintertime is over
And the morning dew is clingin’ to the clover

When I go
I don’t care if I’m a king
When I go
I won’t care if I have wings
O I’m so thankful for the things I’m given
I’d like to see these blessings up in heaven
I don’t want a throne up in the air
I just want a wooden rockin’ chair
When I go

I see paradise upon the hillside
Where the sunlight and the golden poppy grows
There’s a banquet at the lake shore diner
When they’re servin’ chili fries and Sloppy Joes
My friends work hard tendin’ crops and farmland
So on weekends we’ve got one ambition here
That’s the stroll along the lakeside boardwalk
To the general store beside the fishin’ pier

As I open my Corona with a church key
I can hear a bluebird singin’ in a birch tree

When I go
I don’t care if I’m a king
When I go
I won’t care if I have wings
O I’m so thankful for the things I’m given
I’d like to see these blessings up in heaven
I don’t want a throne up in the air
I just want a porch and rockin’ chair
When I go

I have always thought of death and dying
As a boundless sea that sets a river free
And so when my course has reached the ocean
I hope grace and heaven will deliver me

I will say my goodbyes to a coffin pillow
Then I’ll ride the moonlight past a lonely willow

When I go
I don’t care if I’m a king
When I go
I won’t care if I have wings
O I’m so thankful for the things I’m given
I’d like to see these blessings up in heaven
I don’t want a throne up in the air
I just want a wooden rockin’ chair
When I go

There are many thoughts on passing over
And so in this simple song I’m tellin’ mine…
