Apple Logic Pro now with Alchemy

Post by RonKujawa » Wed Aug 26, 2015 5:25 am

I was not an Alchemy user in the past, but Apple released a new update that includes this synth they recently purchased. After installing the initial update last night and playing around, there are some really interesting sounds in there. I'm currently installing the full 14 plus GB additional content. Initially I heard a lot of cool arpeggiated patches that would be a great starting point for tension cues. I also had some fun writing synth lines that might work really well in 80's inspired indie rock.

If you have Logic, the (FREE) price is right for the update.

Pretty cool! How did you get the download? I don't see the option in the "Download Additional Content" menu.

Alchemy is great in itself, and it has good libraries too, which I hope work ok with the integrated version. Thanks for the heads up!

Paul - it's an update at the app store. Hope they fixed some other bugs!! There are quite a few!

Yep, update at App Store. After the update, drop down within Logic to Download Additional Content for the full thing.

Personally, I never got it to work entirely, but there's plenty of potential. I'll likely give it a shot, since I'm moving to Macs.

The additive synth is pretty nifty, you can import a sample and tweak, add and subtract harmonics.

Also has granular and of course subtractive.

I also didn't get the old Alchemy to work *entirely*, but what did work was pretty cool. I see this thread kind of died; is it because everyone is too busy playing with the new Alchemy?? It is pretty sweet and fun to use.

Yeah, it's a big update - lots of good stuff. Although, there are still some big bugs un-fixed. I will mention two that I checked for immediately. For one, I was hoping that they would make it possible to save an elaborate stack with multi-out software instrument and audio tracks as a channel strip (instead of having to save the whole set up as a template) - unless I'm doing something wrong, that still is a mess. Also, a remaining small but irritating bug is that you still can't arrow through MIDI notes and have the screen scroll or change as you go. How that got broken I can't imagine, but since X you have to advance the window (home or end depending on bkwards or forwards) as a separate move. IOW, if you arrow to a note which is off screen, the screen doesn't update and your selection disappears. You have to hit a key to advance the screen, and then find out which note you are on. If you do a lot of fine MIDI editing, the cognitive time you waste doing this adds up. And it's something that has worked for years and years.

I know, bitch and moan. It's a wonderful update, and Alchemy is pretty great. But...fix the more prosaic bugs too?
