Something simple to record vocals and guitar?

Post by TheElement » Fri Sep 11, 2015 1:12 pm

My Dad wants to sketch out some songs on his own. He's like 70 so is old school.

Any simple suggestions he might be able to use to record with?

Thanks! 8-)

isolated: iPhone with a variety of 4 track apps (and greater)
Zoom H4 with a mic and headphones.

Thanks Andy. Probably only one track. but maybe two track might work..

I like the iphone idea. Wonder if something like an ipad might work also.

I had one of those Zooms and I couldn't figure it out. lol I think my brain has a mental block when it comes to hardware.

I like the iphone idea but he doesn't know how to use one.

Might check the ipad stuff..

Thanks! 8-)

The sound recorder in the iPhone / iPad is plenty capable if he just wants to plop something down on the table and have at it. Would something like Garage Band on the iPad confuse him or help him? He could lay down vocals and guitar at once, or he could do the guitar first then the vocal afterwards. Just an idea.

Thanks Paulie. 8-)

Yeah I was thinking something like Garageband that can work on his PC. Would need a mic and interface..

Does Garageband work on PC now? Heard it might. Or might need to use Mixcraft?

These are all usb interfaces and come with bundled software. They are all $99
They can do both mic and hi-z for direct guitar.
Mackie might be the most simple, intuitive software with traction 3??

Simple? I'd suggest the Zoom H5; it's simpler than its predecessor, the H4N, and has all the same capabilities under the hood, but you set levels with knobs, instead of increment/decrement buttons, and the menu has fewer layers. The basic transport controls are right on the face. It defaults to recording in stereo with the onboard mics, but in the event that you want to simultaneously record a two-mix from the board and an X/Y pair in the house, you're covered there, too. I know, cuz I used an H4N on a location shoot, operating a boom on an indie pic. (of course there's a long and colorful story, 'bout that; I was music supervisor and lead composer, but I got dragooned)

You can get something like the Rode XYI for iPad or iPhone (different versions). Paired with the rode app, or a simple free app like Presonus Capture, it should work fine.

Save the file in iCloud, OneDrive, Dropbox ect, and you're ready to go.

Plug and play.

I just realized I still got a Zoom R8 recorder. but that would be too fidgety.

I think maybe just can teach my Dad to use Audacity on his PC and use a mic/pre interface. Any good ones out there? Thanks! 8-)
