A little different of a thing for me

Post by bobporri » Sun Nov 22, 2015 3:55 pm

I was in a mood to try something a little different for GYAWS this week. I wanted to go sparse on instrumentation, just used uke. I guess any thoughts of genre etc. would help. I put "alternative" as genre but that's not right (I had to put something on Soundcloud for now). Any thoughts on any aspects could help. I thought adding things like shaker, or maybe finger snaps, or even no instruments but I'm not sure if the vocal would stand alone (or if it even stands with instrumentation for that matter  .

Anyways, up on the chopping block, "Things to Say"

Nice Bob!

Cool chord progression and harmonies. Just my opinion but I actually hear this working best as a heavy alt rock tune like Foo Fighters. They do some interesting chords progressions with heavier electric guitars alot like on Something From Nothing and The Pretender.

I always enjoy your stuff!

What's interesting to these old-dude ears is how you manage to pull off such a cool
hybrid of McCartney-esque chords & change sensibilities, mixed with Pink Floyd-meets-Moody Blues
vocals & harmonies... and juxtapose all that against the simplicity of an ukulele.
(oo-cool-lay-lee!) :?
Quite magical, Mr. P.
Very nicely done.
Cheers!

I could hear a bass guitar and some brushed drums come in, but that would make it more old school.

When it kicked off, and it was just your vocal and the uke, I thought that you should be doing a drier, heavily compressed vocal, as that would make it more contemporary. But then the backing vocals, which are cool, would take it in another direction.

I think a bass guitar, playing stabbed notes on the 3rd of 4th beat, might be a cool addition. And maybe some shakers or hand claps, but not used 100% of the time? I'd think of them more as sound effects rather than beats.

As to a la's, that's almost impossible with a uke driven song! (and every time i right uke, my auto correct is making if Luke!)

Whatever it is, it's a cool little ditty.

John

I really like this Bob...you could almost hear this on the new David Gilmour album. I like the harmonies and your uke playing.

No a la's come to mind except what I mentioned above. I'd love to hear this song with some more instruments, light drums/percussion, synth..etc. Just for fun and a different version...but you know me Bob...I produce the crap out of everything.

Good Stuff Bob.

Hi Bob Yes, this is very cool. There are so many ways to go with this. I think it is going to come down to what you want?? Like the rich vocals and reverb, however the bgv take away slightly in some places to hear you better. I was wondering if you might try sometime subbing out the uke for something else to make it even cooler?? This could be darn good IMHO

Press on

Sincerely

Paul

These are all interesting thoughts. The consensus seems to be to try adding other things to this. I will and follow up. I could see a number of versions actually. I may start with the shaker and bass. I do like the synth idea too. Thanks for the ideas so far on this. Oh, and Paul, I will see if I can do something to make the vocals a little more consistently distinct (more compression maybe).
