Another Blues inst. Should I do this?

Post by elser » Fri Nov 27, 2015 4:16 pm

I think I often shoot myself in the foot because I'm too loose with my reading of the listings. So here's a Blues tune, which again I've kinda put a unique stamp on and I'm wondering if I should. This is a very rough and short version. I'm just wondering if I should move forward with it.

The song is called Something Missing, see if you figure out what's missing.

Here's the listing.

GUITAR-based BLUES INSTRUMENTALS are needed for a NON-Exclusive, Direct-to-Supervisor $1,000 Placement for a brand new Dramatic TV Series. They’re looking for original, authentic-sounding, Down-to-Mid-Tempo Instrumentals in the general stylistic wheelhouse of artists like Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Mississippi John Hurt, Johnny Winter, etc., etc., etc.

Quoting the source: “Since it’s a new show, we’re pretty much open to all styles of Blues for this pitch. But, the primary focus of the instrumental should be the guitar, acoustic and/or Electric. Solo and/or full band are both welcome. This will be used to score a scene, so the performance should really shine.”

Although the references have vocals, please submit Instrumentals only for this pitch. Please submit mood-setting, Guitar-based Instrumentals that sound like a greasy, gritty, real deal Blues act with guitar being the primary focus of your piece. Your submissions should be solid and well-played from start to finish, with a full-length, song-like structure (not a Cue) that’s compelling and mood setting. They’re looking for a range of styles that can be used for different scenes in this TV series, so imagine which emotion(s) your piece could evoke, and let that be your guide.

Jon
Thats a fine track, IMHO. Id pursue finalizing it and submitting. I think you're on target myself, but that's just my 1/2 cent.

Go for it. Good playin', nice groove.

Nice one Jon!
Listening on my office speakers so I can only comment on the overall mood, sounds great!
Something about the ending feels a little off... did you dub the last guitar hit or something else???
Thinking the ending could tighten up a hair...
Good Luck!

Cass, Tim, thanks for the feedback. This version was recorded in about half an hour, just a rough idea. But I was hesitant to go forward with it because stylistically it's like a 12 bar Blues, except it's only 11 bars! I've had returns for similar quirks in the past. But I'll take your feedback as confirmation to finish it.

Thanks again,
Jon

Yeah, what's missing would be a melody, mostly. Depending on the usage, that could be perfectly fine, especially given the rather broad terms in the listing. Other than that, my only note is that the ending seems a bit abrupt, as if the musicians involved weren't really having all that much fun. A composed melody and a more interesting finish would take this across the goal line, IMO.

PS, I submitted a couple of tracks for this same listing, and posted them here.
