Same Old Truck ©2015 Robert George BMI

I was at Pep Boys and heard it from a friend
She was back in town again
Later I was checkin’ my old Chevy’s brakes
When she unlatched my squeaky gate
Then she saw the shed with my whiskey still
And shot me a look I remembered well
But the sparkle in her eyes began to flash
When she saw her picture on my Chevy’s dash
She looked around awhile and smiled at my old tool kit
She shook her head and said, “You haven’t changed a bit

Same old creaky farmhouse in a shady grove
Same old country station on the radio
Sixty strips of jerky dryin’ in the sun
Same old army boots and same old gun for shooting ducks
Homemade canvas hammock hung between some birch
Same old scruffy beard you only shave for church
Ragged ball cap and a holey Titans shirt
Same old rusty bumper caked in dirt on the same old truck”

And she stood there lookin’ strong and self-assured
She was coiffed n manicured
So I wiped that dusty tailgate clean
So she wouldn’t ruin her designer jeans
Then I poured us whiskey on the rocks
And we sat for hours and we talked
She said despite her new career and Versaci purse
Her life was changin’ for the worse
Then she raised her glass and laughed and toasted my old shed
I just took her hand and grinned when she looked at me and said

“same old drafty farmhouse in a shady grove
One more pot of chili steamin’ on the stove
That noisy generator made from parts you found
Same old deer hide belt and the same old hound for tracking buck
Homemade canvas hammock hung between some birch
Same old full moon on its Smoky Mountain perch
Ragged ball cap and a holey Titans shirt
Bent up rusty bumper caked in dirt on the same old truck”

Well, I didn’t speak
I just brushed my hand across her cheek
She said, “I don’t need to ask
Cos I know your love will last
I can feel your steady heart
By the kind of man you are

Same old creaky farmhouse in a shady grove
Same old country station on the radio
That old Timex on your wrist that barely runs
Same old army boots and same old gun for shooting ducks
Same old long walks in the silver evening mist
Same anticipation for a midnight kiss
And the same Magnolia breeze that’s warm and sweet
Steamy windows and the soft front seat in the same old truck

The same old truck
The same old truck…”
