Lost MIDI Controller in Logic 10.2.1 Update

Post by sansharbour » Mon Jan 25, 2016 2:14 am

I went to play my keyboard in Logic Pro x yesterday and I got a message Please select Midi Channel 1 for your Roland A series keyboard.
Well I spent all afternoon trying to make Logic see the keyboard . I am usually good at figuring things out but not this time. Very frustrating

My first thought was what did I do to cause this. Nothing that I knew of

But I did update to Logic 10.2.1
Then I googled this and it seems that quite a few people who updated are having the same problem at least with AKAi and Roland keyboard controllers
Are any of you who use Logic experiencing this problem and if so do you have a fix.

Thanks
Don

Don, I would say most keyboard controllers default to channel 1.

http://www.rolandus.com/support/knowled ... /201918839

You basically have to set your "midi transmit channel" within the midi controller.

If you set the input midi channel to "all" in the daw, it usually works unless you have other instruments and tracks also on 1. Not the best choice.

You usually also can use the daw like a midi patch bay, input channel 1, output channel 2?? or 16??

It doesn't really matter unless, you are playing another track and it is the same midi channel.

For most people it's probably easier to reserve their keyboard controller for midi channel 1 and change the midi channel output of the other tracks to a different channel even though it may have been recorded on the same kb controller on channel 1. Hope that makes sense.
if I only I could figure out how to get my MIDI keyboards to work !!!! They were fine with the last version of Logic Pro X, right up until I installed the new version released today!!
For example, my little Roland A49 used to play whatever instruments I loaded in to Logic Pro X, without any setup or configuration. (...)

OK, figured it out.

There's a folder within the Logic Pro app called "MIDI Device Scripts". In it you'll find folders containing configuration scripts for a bunch of MIDI controllers from different brands.

All you need to do is find the one that corresponds to your keyboard and zip it right there and then, then get rid of the original file (they all have a ".device" extension). If at any point you want to have this behavior back, just unzip the file. Keep in mind that future updates will overwrite anything you do inside the app (like zipping then deleting this configuration script).
(...)
Of course, you'll also need to delete the assignments Logic's already done for your controller in the Controller Assignments window (just select your controller in the "Zone" column and hit delete).

Hey guys thanks for the advice
Len and Andy
I reset my a49 controller to transmit on Channel 1
Then I made sure that I had the latest driver and I checked by testing the audio midi setup to see if the controller was transmitting and it was detected
Still nothing inside Logic
I am a bit nervous about digging deep and zipping the Roland midi script file because I don't think I should have to do this.....but will in the end if I have to

BUT the funny thing is ...The A49 plays normally out of Logic i can play it fine in Kontakt Reaktor and Uvi workstation
So I am thinking that it is just a little command glitch.....that I can't figure out ....yet

Andy when the box came up with the message Please select MIDI CH 1 on your Roland A-Series Keyboard I clicked on it and then OK but still not able to play my keyboard in Logic

The thing is There is always a reason....i just have to find it

Appreciate your comments
Don

hey Don,

bummer. I have really no clue as to how to fix it. My experience with Logic has occasionally been a lot of unplugging and re-plugging things. But luckily since L X I haven't had any issues.

I am sure something will turn up on Logic Pro websites like expert etc.

one thing - did you try trashing your logic preference files? that is usually my #1 solution when things start acting REALLY weird. You can google for help on that.

At least we know that the A49 is transmitting midi on Channel 1.

I think the answer is somewhere in the midi routing inside Logic. In the midi preferences there are also
besides just the midi channels there are midi ports.

I'm not familiar with Logic, so I might have to do some google manual searching, lol, it's probable, though not likely that a midi effect is messing things up, like don't play any note below C8??

Okay, I would use the midi environment window to setup midi, it shows how everything is connected in one space! There's nothing hidden there. Definitely the place to begin the troubleshooting imo!

ok - rethought.

so do I understand correctly?

1) opening logic and trying to play a virtual instrument produces no notes and nothing recorded in the piano roll if you try to record?
2) leave logic open, but if you open a standalone version of xln keys or Kontakt and load an instrument, then playing on the keyboard does produce notes from the Kontakt standalone?

ok here's something to try:

1) back to logic
2) try playing again
3) look in the transport

Image

anything showing?

4) open enviroment

Image

5) go to clicks and ports layer

Image

6) Check Input View

Image

If nothing is showing in Input View when you are playing on the keyboard, is it physically connect to: 1 Physical Input, 2 Input Notes, 3 Input view, and 4 Sequencer Input?

If not connect them up. This is what always used to happen to me. Had something to do with my particular setup but it works these days.

+ what Andy says about the midi environment!

I had just made my edit and noticed Andy posted this.

Andy

new territory for me
Here is my configuration
I can play the little keyboard and hear sound with my touchpad
BUT not with the A49
I have also included a pic of the Audio midi setup
I am just going directly into the computer via a USB cable

I appreciate your help

When you play the A3, does the input view change? If so, that means you are receiving the midi.

Do you have an instrument assigned to the sequencer track?

The upper left corner of your pic says "Instrument: No selection"
