Don't Say It's Over - Michelle Leverette and Casey UPDATED!

Post by Casey H » Tue Feb 02, 2016 1:30 pm

Hi
A lot has happened since I posted our first rough. Thank you all for your feedback and "a la" suggestions. Here is the final production with the lovely and talented Alyse Black on vocal, Nathan Nasby on fiddle, and Scott Free on everything else including the production.

Thanks!! :D

PS Michelle and I working together on this song was a direct result of us meeting at the rally! :D

Casey,

In terms of structure, I'd be tempted to lose the 2nd verse and have a 2 (?) line pre-chorus to get to the chorus a little bit sooner.

I'm definitely hearing a harmony vocal thru the whole chorus to sweeten it up.

Lyrics. I like the first line, it's very good. Some of the other lines are generic, but if you're going for a film/tv placement I don't think that's an issue.

I'd be tempted to change this line...

With my lover and my friend

to

you're my lover, you're my friend.

...as you are singing directly to someone, right?

It reminds me a little bit of Shawn Colvin.

John

Well, I liked the two verse beginning (probably because I've used it myself). I thought of harmonies in the chorus as well -- unless the production is strong enough to enhance the chorus lines. The first two "over" s I heard the chorus seemed "forced" on the first listen, but then I got used to them.
Overall, a good song & I think it has legs.

this is hard for me to say.. but here are some thoughts but she sounds like Ann Wilson from Heart. This also seems more Americana ish,

maybe Indigo Girls

Or maybe
Check out Laura Marling's Blues Run the Game... https://youtu.be/ZpDsPb9aZFs

Along those lines

You might be able to craft it that way in production and styling. Would have to have someone that sings a bit more Indie (hint hint) lol

This may not be a hip enough a la suggestion, but I hear Shelby Lynne.
(or Sheryl Crow)

Great luck to you both!

My 2 cents:
I totally dig it - sounds great throughout, excellent & great team work.
Especially like the build & lift of the Bridge.
Could certainly hear this working for the right scene/film.
Good luck with its future & placement.
