Small Jazz Ensemble Listing

Post by dougstronach » Sat Feb 06, 2016 12:39 pm

Hi All:

The listing is now gone from the listings page so I apologize for not being able to post the specific wording (perhaps TAXI could if they see this) but wondered if anyone could shed some light on listings like these where they are asking for generic background music for a scene with no particular need for the music to be special or unique in any way. If I remember this specific listing correctly, it was for a small jazz instrumental ensemble playing jazz music for the background of a scene. What surprised and confused me was that the payout was quite good...around $1000.

Now, I could search half a dozen different music libraries online and find countless examples of small jazz ensembles playing exactly what the listing is asking for and more than likely costing a lot less than $1000 per use. There is no shortage of this type of track, if the listing is indeed asking for what it appears to be asking for. So why does this type of thing become a TAXI listing? Why does TAXI even take the listing on? It seems a waste of our time and money to submit to this when you know there are so many tracks already available in music libraries around the world.

Any ideas? Did anyone submit to it and if so, were they forwarded? Are these listings in general worth submitting to?

Thanks in advance,

Doug s.

I submitted to that listing. :)

My guess is that some librarians are tired of their old catalog content and want something new. Perhaps it is laziness, or something else. I'm still too new to actually know much. :)

Right; I think they're looking for fresher sonics, anytime they ask for something they should surely already have. If you think about it, cocktail jazz today doesn't sound like it did thirty years ago. I can hear "thirty years ago' in some local commercial jingles, and the years have not been kind; so much degradation from generation loss, tape hiss all over the place, muddy analog reverbs and murk. Even stuff that's not that old can have out-of-date sampled instruments, or even just less authentic composition than the modern standard.

As this listing is right up my alley, I submitted 8 tunes of various textures and tempos within this genre. The deadline was Feb. 3, so I'll let you know next month. Your question is a good one, and I'm hoping that Mojo is correct. That said, direct-to-Supervisor deals seem to be a very rare occurrence, and I wonder now if this isn't a carrot-on-a-stick type listing.

Yes Niall, would be interested to hear what happens with forwards and of course any placements.

Direct-to-supe deals used to be a lot rarer, but more and more supers have been getting onboard.

Did anyone get a track through on this one?
Just interested to find out, and it seems that others were too.

You guys are jazzers so I think I should ask you. I'm a newbie and I've been writing what I think maybe too esoteric and avant garde. Here is one I just did called red and blue https://soundcloud.com/david-sprouse-76 ... d-and-blue. Is this stuff too *personal* to submit for listings?
