Crossroads of Fate

Crossroads of Life ©2016 Robert George BMI

Got laid off a dead end job in Sioux Falls
Packed all my possessions in a U-Haul
And old tread mill, an outdoor grill, a Mr. Coffee and a toaster
Musty old books, rusty fishhooks and a tattered Springsteen poster
Then I headed for a new job offer down in Birmingham

She was standin’ on that rain-soaked highway
It was like her fate was goin’ my way
I turned around, rolled my window down and said I was bound for Alabama
She tossed her guitar, in my car and said she was headed for Savannah
And then that highway showed me who I really am

I was at the crossroads of life
Where all destiny awaits
And it’s the hardest decision, for a man to let his vision
Choose what path his life will take

Well, she talked of places that she’d been to
And the books and music she was into
There was drumming in the skies, as we harmonized on I’m On Fire
There were lightning strikes and we sounded like a ragged southern choir
As we sang our way to sunrise in that car

I took her all the way to Savannah
Cos I’d all but blown off Alabama
I’m a crazy guy but was I foolish or courageous
Joinin’ that girl, in the rowdy world of roadhouse stages
Shielded by a childhood dream and her guitar

I was at the crossroads of life
Where all destiny awaits
And it’s the hardest decision, for a man to let his vision
Choose what path his life will take

I pawned the treadmill, and the outdoor grill and coffeemaker and the toaster
Kept a coupla books, some old fishhooks and the faded Springsteen poster
Bought a cheap guitar and learned some chords

Though I can’t say what the future’s bringin’
For the first time my poor heart is singin’
And singin’ my own song is its own reward

I was at the crossroads of life
Where all destiny awaits
And it’s the hardest decision, for a man to let his vision
Choose what path his life will take
