The Only Way to Ride ©2016 Robert George BMI
Late September cattle drive across the Texas plains
It was months since there had been a drop of rain
Both man and beast were threatened by the drought
So four cowboys were sent ahead to scout
Three nights later one cowboy came riding back
He said we’d find water if we followed in his tracks
Just ride a narrow pass through dark and rocky hills
On the other side we’d drink our fill
And the other scouts were lost or prob’ly dead
So the old cook stood up and said,
“The man who returned from the dust
The darkness and the dead of night
If we listen he’ll reveal to us
The way to go, the only way to ride”
Most o’ them were pressing to go northeast
Where the ride was wide and resistance was least
So they wandered off and suffered blind defeat
When they perished with the herd in blazing heat
Me n that old cook stuck close behind the scout
There were dark nights of the soul when we had doubts
Then one morning we were rewarded at last
With an oasis at the end of the pass
Cos the man who returned from the dust
The darkness and the dead of night
If we listen he’ll reveal to us
The way to go, the only way to ride
We went back and posted signs along the way
Even so there’s many who prefer to go astray
But the man who returned from the dust
The darkness and the dead of night
If we listen he’ll reveal to us
The way to go, the only way to ride
Yes, if we listen he’ll reveal to us
The way to go, the only way to ride
The only way to ride…
