Maybe it's marketing that is dead??
And too much information. I remember a time when I knew next to nothing about an artist or band other than their music. Many times didn't even know what they looked like until I was already hooked, lol!

Re: Why social media is DEAD for music marketing
Well, actually it's probably some of the marketing methods, lol!
Commercial interruptions are just bathroom breaks, turning out the dogs, or popping some popcorn.
Or if you have nothing to do and must endure them, snarky comments like hating this commercial, this ad is so stupid, etc. lol
Incorporating the products as props in the set is probably far more effective, more realistic, plus it doesn't look so dumb when they blur out a car's make emblem, or disguise the brand of soda or beer that is being drank! The questions are more positive also, like, what kind of car is that?
I mean, I'm already an American, a consumer, lol, I don't need a hard sell, I just need an introduction! Not an interruption, lol! Or any more propaganda!
My dad always comments when a company advertises alot, they must not be selling, probably not accurate, but what a bad impression!
I don't mind being kept informed of a sale or a new product, if I'm interested I'll visit your site or other sites for more info.

Re: Why social media is DEAD for music marketing
I've had some success with social media. There are groups, channels, blogs and pages that if they pick up one of your songs you will get tons of exposure. Once you build an audience then you can sell your music to them. Or radio stations and DJ's pick up your tracks and start playing them. more exposure, sales and royalties.
More exposure the better.
Some sites I am working:
Soundcloud
Twitter
Facebook
Youtube
Spinnin Records Talent Pool
Reverbnation
Its not an easy road and takes a ton of promotion. Meanwhile you have to keep upping your productions and getting them out there.
