Old Grey Mare ©2016 Robert George BMI
Well, she stayed beside me for as long as she could
There were red horizons, flames and smoldering wood
But I just grew colder,
As she pawed my shoulder hoping I’d awaken
And as always she was steadfast and without fear
Watching my eyes as the cannon fire drew near
With an empty saddle,
She fled the battle when my breath was taken
O Atlanta was burning
And the sky was filled with black despair
And I met oblivion
All dressed in grey with an old grey mare
Well, those acres must’ve interred thousands of men
And yet after many months she found me again
After dark she lay down,
On the cold clay ground near a lonely daisy
And then suddenly my breath and spirit felt warm
And my grey coat was no longer tattered and torn
Back in the saddle,
We rode into battle cos she’d come to raise me
O Atlanta was burning
And the sky was filled with black despair
I rode to oblivion
All dressed in grey with an old grey mare
Like a vapor in the night
On the songs of whippoorwills
With my saber at my side
We still haunt these Georgia hills
O Atlanta was burning
And the sky was filled with black despair
I ride through oblivion
All dressed in grey with an old grey mare
All dressed in grey with an old grey mare
An old grey mare…
