I Never Gave Up the Search

I Never Gave Up the Search ©2016 Robert George BMI

Downstairs I could hear the screamin’,
Like a booze inspired demon
Had invaded my fourth foster home
So that night I fin’lly broke free,
When I climbed down that old oak tree
And I slipped off in the dark alone

I wasn’t sure who I was or where I’d come from
So I pointed my tomorrows at the sun

And I never gave up the search
As I journeyed near and far
When you treat your life like a church
Heaven tells you who you are

Never wanted no one’s pity,
Took odd jobs in city after city
And I tried to trace my tangled roots
Shoveled snow in Minnesota,
Plowed some fields in South Dakota
Cos my fam’ly tree had scattered fruit

Ev’ry night I closed my eyes and saw the sky
On my weary knees I looked for help on high

And I never gave up the search
As I journeyed near and far
When you treat your life like a church
Heaven tells you who you are

I’d spent all August up in Baltimore
And a knock came at my duplex door
A lady said her name and showed me her ID
At first I didn’t know just what to say
Then we talked and cried the night away
She’s a teacher and fifteen years older than me

Our broken hearts soon built a bridge between us
She said, “when I gave you up I lost who I was

But I never gave up the search
As I journeyed near and far
When you treat your life like a church
Heaven tells you who you are

When you treat your life like a church
Heaven tells you who you are”
