Dark, intimate and moody S/S return, what do y'all think?

Post by burpo » Fri May 13, 2016 5:10 pm

"There is a Hole" on my TAXI page was returned with the comment
"This feels overly dramatic and dark."

Check out reference tracks like Elliot Smith's "Between the Bars.

What do y'all think?

MOODY, ACOUSTIC-based (Piano and/or Guitar) SINGER/SONGWRITER SONGS with Male or Female Vocals are needed for many NON-Exclusive, $3,000 placements by the Music Supervisor of a Feature Film. The Supervisor is looking for emotionally compelling, intimate, Down-to-Mid-Tempo Songs that could be found on playlists with artists like (but not limited to) Ray LaMontagne, Sia, Kris Allen, Fjord, Hozier, Lissie, Sam Smith, A Fine Frenzy, Keaton Henson, Elliot Smith, etc., etc., etc. Please take a listen to the references he gave us to get an idea of what could work for this Film: “Let It Be Me” by Ray LaMontagne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LWpw3CMCEg “Breathe Me” by Sia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFGvmrJ5rjM “It’s Only You” by Kris Allen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbfeSImDntw “Blue” by Fjord: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kFGCwtsWgs “Like Real People Do” by Hozier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrleydRwWms “Together or Apart” by Lissie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN5GOV1sN-Q “Leave Your Lover” by Sam Smith: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=182TRJq9Zt8 “Almost Lover” by A Fine Frenzy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_S_TbD1XFM “Flesh and Bone” by Keaton Henson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAqp9MtRFNo “Between The Bars” by Elliot Smith: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPD-a1FjUtU Quoting the Music Supervisor: “The film is a dark and dramatic modern day love story, with a really well-known cast, similar to the Film ‘Unfaithful.’ We’re looking for moody, dark, emotional, lost love, soul-searching type songs. Songs should be able to support and play under very emotional scenes and montage sequences.” Give them well-crafted songs that hit you right in the heart, with compelling melodies, thought provoking lyrics, and a vocal performance that’s delivered in a intimate, honest, and meaningful way. Instrumentation can be solely acoustic (Piano and/or Guitar), or have a fuller band sound, but should be somewhat consistent with the references above. Introspective lyric themes about lost love will work really well for this pitch, but don’t limit yourself. Lyrics about a wider range of concepts like loss in general, a new start, regret, hurt and pain… just about any emotion you’d feel after a breakup could work! Universal lyrics will work best, so please avoid references to specific names, dates, times, brands, and places. Please do NOT copy or rip off the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). These will be Non-Exclusive, $3,000, Direct-to-Supervisor placements, and you’ll keep 100% ownership of your copyright and master recordings. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis by a TAXI A&R person handpicked by the Music Supervisor. No full critiques.

I compared yours to "Between the Bars" and "Let it Be Me" and immediately heard the difference in tempo
If the ref track has already been roughed into a scene in editing, your slower one has lower odds of working in that scene.
The screeners are comparing everything to the ref tracks
The ref's that I listened to are faster, that could be why they felt as they did...

Keep in mind that the screener's feedback is great!
Keep an eye open for "Dramatic and Dark Piano Singer/Songwriter"

Nice Work!
