The Roots of Tomorrow ©2016 Robert George BMI
Distant mem’ries strung together like a daisy chain
Parked down by the railroad crossing blasting “Crazy Train”
How I longed to hitch my fortune to a midnight freight
And escape regrets that blossom from a small town fate
Because my heart was always making plans
To leave my footprints in Sahara sands
And the snows of Kilimanjaro
I thought morning was an endless quest
And the fruits of life and happiness
Only sprung from the roots of tomorrow
On the road of life my daydreams had the right of way
And they’d lead me though the darkness to the light of day
But thinking that the sun shines bright on foreign mountainsides
Kept my hungry soul from ever feeling satisfied
Because my heart was always making plans
To leave my footprints in Sahara sands
And the snows of Kilimanjaro
I thought morning was an endless quest
And the fruits of life and happiness
Only sprung from the roots of tomorrow
I was bound to roam
And I left my home behind to try and get ahead
O but I was wrong
And for way too long the far horizon was my bed
Because my heart was always making plans
To leave my footprints in Sahara sands
And the snows of Kilimanjaro
I thought morning was an endless quest
And the fruits of life and happiness
Only sprung from the roots of tomorrow
No, I’m thankful for the places that I’ve been
Cos they led me to my humble home again
