Exclusive Forwards..How before submitting elsewhere?

Post by cosmicdolphin » Wed May 18, 2016 2:58 am

Had a few forwards now for Exclusive listings , I'm just wondering how long to hold off using the music for other listings or submitting direct to a Library we now have a deal with thanks to Taxi.

I know it's pretty open ended but generally if they want it I reckon they'd be in touch reasonably quickly as with the one deal we got already..it was a just a couple of weeks after the piece got forwarded.

Anybody else got thoughts on this ?

I don't want to lock a cue up indefinitely because of a forward that leads to nothing, but conversely I'd hate to place it non-exclusively somewhere and shoot myself in the foot if the high end Exclusive Library eventually decide they want to sign it some way down the line.

Has anyone been through this dilemma ?

Mark

This is an ongoing dilemma... but a forward isn't a deal. There isn't any way of knowing how long it will take for them to contact you, or whether they will contact you. As a composer you need to decide if you can work on developing and submitting other tracks or whether you want to get those forwarded tracks working for you now and trust that if and when you do get contacted, you can offer them something similar. If you do want to wait, how long to wait? A year? Six months? I really can't say. People have been contacted a year or even two after a forward. And many don't hear anything at all.

I guess I haven't helped much.. but it's really up to you..

Most forwards don't turn into deals. If it does become a deal, sometimes it's 1-2 years later or even longer before you're contacted. You might be contacted immediately but that's rare.

For me, I just keep submitting until a deal is signed. Possibly once or twice the original forward eventually became an offer, and if the track was already signed, I was able to submit a similar track or several, and made a deal that way.

Good luck! Jim
