The Princess and the Pirate ©2016 Robert George BMI

Sunrise is a rose tattoo
On the shoulder of the road
With my Harley roarin’ like a beast
I’m thinkin’ of my outlaw code
I was just a loner in that school
Coastin’ through my senior year
When I’d see her in those crowded halls
Her green eyes shone like chandeliers

Teachers used to point and stare and gossip
Sayin’ that I roamed the roads at night
They thought I was on a hopeless highway
Deep down I suspected they were right

Some folks are afraid or just confused
If they think you’re livin’ free
Even dealers in the parkin’ lot
Used to leave me be
And yet she approached me with a smile
One day after school
As we talked outside of metal shop
Hallways whispers said she was a fool

Her friends used to point and stare and gossip
Sayin’ that I roamed the roads at night
They thought I was on a hopeless highway
Deep down I suspected they were right

Well, she asked me if I’d take her for a night ride
In the foothills where the wild wind blows
As I laid my leather coat around her shoulders
I could see the tattoo of a rose
Then she hopped on and we rode that steely stallion
Till the morning peeked out from the hills
And her mom was on the front porch of their farmhouse
And her burning rage gave me a chill

Neighbors used to point and stare and gossip
Sayin’ that I roamed the roads at night
They thought I was on a hopeless highway
Deep down I suspected they were right

We grew closer in the next few months
And our night rides kissed the morning sun
One day I came out to pick her up
And her mama met me with a gun
Then she made me leave with no goodbye
Past the dusty fields and empty barn
It was almost graduation when I heard
The bank was foreclosin’ on their farm

Janitors’d point and stare and gossip
Sayin’ that I roamed the roads at night
They thought I was on a hopeless highway
Deep down I suspected they were right

After midnight right behind the gym
There were piles of cash and pounds of meth
Me and Smith & Wesson took the cash
And a dealer took his final breath
With a sharp pain just below my heart
And a small hole in my blue jean coat
I left money on her porch last night
Then I headed down the road

Teachers used to point and stare and gossip
Sayin’ that I roamed the roads at night
They thought I was on a hopeless highway
Deep down I suspected they were right

Sunrise is a rose tattoo
On the shoulder of this road…
