For ease of use for hauling around for open street-jam opportunities at Bluegrass festivals, I'd found at a bargain sale this Washburn Rover travel guitar, with case... under a hundred bucks.
After a small accident - oops - I had the buttons replaced with strap-lock hardware.
I was so impressed with quality of the tone from this little spruce & rosewood box, that I couldn't resist finding out how it might sound with a pick up. I had an 'extra' active EMG pickup
(that had come from a pickup swap for a Squire Strat) to act as donor to the plan.
My local luthier/wizard did the install, along with a stealthy 9v battery box...
voila - big, fat Gibson guitar tone (sort of) with no feedback issues.
Next - thanks to my like of Dobro, and a good tip from Bob Porri - I got a riser nut that works like a charm, and a smooth steel bar, to offer the flexibility of turning this little project into a Dobro, swampy-music-maker thing. I haven't taken time to begin to learn, much less master, how to play the darn thing... which I have affectionately named "RoBro"...
I guess "Brover" coulda worked just as well.
Not sure if I should hang onto it... or try to unload it to someone who can make it really sing.
I'm thinking I could at least bring it to the Road Rally... and see if some of my Taxi stringed-instrument Maestros can get some cool tunes out of it.
Just gear-jabberin'... that's all.
