Attn EDM jedi and ninjas!-Struggling w/this electronic track

Post by burpo » Tue Jun 21, 2016 2:59 pm

After watching tons of TAXI TV episodes focused on EDM and Hip Hop cues,
I decided to explore the area.

Trouble is, all of my attempts seem rather mellow and polite, not at all
the fist-pumping anthems sought out in many listings.

Any tips on getting more pump and less slump?

Thanks fer lookin'.

Yep, mellow and polite sounds accurate. :)

This sounds like a good synth pop cue, not EDM at all. Let me give you the advice that a Taxi forum vet gave me last year when I decided to try EDM: "immerse yourself in the genre for a week before you try to write anything." It worked. Here are a couple of examples that you can check out, each of these are one hour broadcasts from SiriusXM:

Aoki's House: https://soundcloud.com/steveaoki/aokis-house-151

Tiesto: Club Life: https://soundcloud.com/tiesto/clublife- ... first-hour

R3hab Show 1395: https://soundcloud.com/ineedr3hab/r3hab ... -r3hab-195

Listen to the drum beats, HEAVY bass drum quarter notes, lots of gritty synths, claps, hi hats, etc.

Hey b! I was just listening to these tracks when u PM'd me. :D

EDM is definitely not my specialty. I'm a hip-hop/r&b/pop guy. So i won't even comment on the first track (even though i dug it. I could feel it working for tv/movie scenes). As for the 2nd track...did u have a post for this in mind? It feels a bit 'ol-skool' hip hop when it starts. Mainly due to the pattern/swing of the drums and the bass. The pad chords definitely give it a laid back cool feel like you mentioned. Once you bring in the creepy melodies and the track comes together fully - I really think it could work for some cool tv/movie scenes. Its really a nice vibe. But again, it depends on the listing. I'm not sure what the refs were (if any)

Hey Marcus!

This was a blue-sky project, not for any particular listing.
The idea was sort of being lost in
a storm in a cloud of space dust. A little bit of menace.
It was an experiment to just get my feet wet in the
non-songwriter waters.

I'd just like to develop the chops to produce what I'd like to,
not just what's just within my narrow current abilities.

Thanks for the ears, man.

I definitely got caught up in the vibe of Lost the Signal. Pretty cool. I dig where you're going with it. Keep it up!

Welcome! :D

Yes definitely what Paulie said. you got to listen to lots of EDM.

Also decide what sub genre of EDM you want to produce. some of the most popular (for film/tv) would be Progressive House (Calvin Harris), Big Room (R3hab), House (Disclosure).

also check Deep House, Electro House and Tropical House.

oh and you definitely want to study these EDM Progressive House legends..
