If our consciences are not concerned
With the tragic lessons that we’ve learned

What’s the purpose of the past
When the die has long been cast for death

What’s the purpose of the past
If the only rainbow up ahead
Is from tears our fellowman has shed

What’s the purpose of the past
If destruction will outlast us all

And somehow we won’t admit it’s senseless
To ignore the wounded and defenseless

So what’s the purpose of the past
If the only bridges that we build
Cross the streams of blood our greed has spilled

If our liberty holds fast to fear
