One Small Thing ©2016 Robert George BMI
I was working in an ER up in Lexington
When I tried to help a victim of a hit and run
That poor young woman knew that she was hurt real bad
And it almost made me cry
When she looked me in the eye
And said, “Doctor, if I die
Please make sure someone looks in on my cat”
I tried but there was only so much I could do
She slipped into a coma in the ICU
Yet, I’d saved a lot of lives
Mothers, fathers, sons and wives
And if there was one thing I knew
It’s one small thing
That can open up our eyes
To receive the light that God can give
To believe and fight the odds and live
Yes, it’s one small thing
That’s where our power lies
Well, I asked the front desk for her address and her name
Her landlord let me in a small place off of Main
That cat was hiding underneath a chair
So I dropped some tuna fish
In its empty dish
Its tail began to swish
As if it felt that someone cared
I know some think that miracles are just absurd
But after it ate it purred and purred
So that afternoon
I took it to that woman’s room
And I swear she woke up when she heard
One small thing
And it opened up her eyes
To receive the light that God can give
To believe and fight the odds and live
Yes, it’s one small thing
That’s where our power lies
If our fate has run its course
We’re here and then we’re gone
But life and death are doors
And sometimes they hinge on
One small thing
That can open up our eyes
To receive the light that God can give
To believe and fight the odds and live
Yes, it’s one small thing
That’s where our power lies
One small thing
One small thing…
