Hi All,

I took everyone's advice and worked on a new mix (same link).

Please let me know how you think it's sitting now.

Thanks,

John

Hey John!
The whole mix seems too hot to me...
In Stereo the Kick is the main culprit slamming my meters
In Mono my meters are slammed almost the entire time
I would first try pulling the kick back some...
But more importantly, why is the stereo field (when summed in mono) creating so much overload???
Something I'm still trying to learn to balance out
Hopefully an advanced MIXER can help us out!!!

First time listener so I didn't hear the earlier mix

It sounds over-compressed / limited to me, like the life has been squashed out of it. I also think I hear some distortion creeping in.

The vocal seems too high in the mix me like it needs pulling back 3 or 4db, I can't really hear the acoustic guitars, they need to come up and maybe a little brighter.

On my little Avantone the bass is almost non existent so it's missing some midrange tone that helps it translate to smaller speakers.

Hope that helps, I had a quick flick through some of the other songs on your Soundcloud and they sounded more balanced.

Hmm, I think it might have had something to do with the Final Mix plugin I put on the Master Bus. The WAV file looked good, but I was riding the limit within the plugin. I just adjusted things and reposted. Better?

i don't know how many mixes till this point but,
what i heard was decent.
nothing really jumps out to me.. if i were to pick something (and this is just a personal preference)
i thought the snare was a little dry could use some room feel.. i would try a little reverb on the whole mix
to soften it up and bring a room sound could be cool?

it sounds tight to me, but i dont have any golden ears or anything.
cheers

Sounds more balanced to me now, and it breathes better

I still feel it's a collection of separate stuff rather than a coherent band type mix. The vocals especially sound separated from the rest of it ..as though it's something about the verb FX on them affecting the tone, and the drums also sound like they are in a different space..I sorta sounds like they have an echo/delay which gives a bit of a flamming sound.

Maybe go with Jimmy's idea and take off any individual reverbs / delays and use something like an EMT plate type verb on a send /return to blend everything together. Make sure you EQ the return, it can help to hi pass filter them to stop low end build up and I often find there's can be a slightly unflattering frequency in the vocal range that if I notch out of the reverb it helps it sit nicer.

Arrangement wise I think you need to keep the listener laser focused, so for example on the intro I'm really not sure what I am supposed to be listening to..when the vocal isn't there you should really have something step into the spotlight and take over that role.

hmmm... lots of comments about the drums so far.
Getting my first listen, it seems odd that the snare is panned in the verses, then comes to the center in the chorus. Is this a programmed drum track? Any option for substituting/experimenting with a more traditional, centered, live drummer?
Seems that might help with the 'whole-band' concept, too;
which I think someone already mentioned.

That little bit of organ part in the beginning, at this tempo, reminded me of an oldie...
Mendicino; which I first heard being blared out by the DJ on the bumper-cars at a German-American FolksFest carnival- when I lived in Bremerhaven.
That was a really, really, really long time ago.
 :? :P

Good stuff, John... as some might say "it's got good bones!" :)

Sounds pretty tight this time around John. Like the breakdown where it gets quiet, but I think I hear a couple off vox notes at around 1:50-51 Right when you don't have any background to mask them. I might be wrong and this is the only thing I can hear that isn't quite right for me. The more the song gets refined, the slimmer the pickins.

Sincerely

Paul
