Return on New Wave Instrumental (Reviewer 325 ; U160803NW)
Well, at least this is a new kind of Taxi rejection for me, ha ha:
"Musically, this is too close to Lipps, "Funkytown". There might be copyright issues with this piece."
I definitely disagree, of course, but that's not why I'm posting this. I actually did think I might be a little "close" to a copyrighted song with my submission, but for a completely different existing song! Too funny!
Here is the piece I submitted:
http://www.taximusic.com/hosting/home.p ... oddkinsley (click on "Neon Drive")
Here is the song the review claims my piece too closely resembles:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s36eQwgPNSE
To me, the only real resemblance is in the jumping synth bass line, but that is a VERY common technique, especially in that era.
Now THIS is actually the primary song I used for reference when writing my piece (along with a bit of "Hungry Like The Wolf" By Durand Durand):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mod9ob_ ... K0JkOyp9gw
Notice it's a different known song from the era, that also uses the jumping synth bass line (as a great many 80s songs did). Now if they said I was too close to this one, I MIGHT have agreed, ha ha... But Funkytown?! Umm... I'll toss that one out to you, fine forum people, to decide. Please leave your opinions below. I had my say, so it's time for me to forget this one. I am already knee-deep in my next submissions, so I'd better get back to it. Have a great day!

my 2 cents:
the melody in funky town at 0:04 was close enough to your melody at 0:04 in your piece (obviously not identical but reminiscent) and the screener made a call.
Sometimes that happens even if your aren't using that piece as a ref.

Slamming bass drum!
"Funky Town" immediately came to mind, but you didn't steal anything. However, In today's legal environment a court might disagree. I completely disagree with the most recent law suit results... sadly most judges seem to have skipped out on music class. Perhaps change the lead patch and melody some more, there will be more 80s listings.

Funkytown would not have come to mind, were it not suggested.
Now that it has, I still think this track hardly bears any resemblance to it.
Good work.

Thanks for the opinion! I agree, of course , but I decided to change it up a little anyhow. A couple of people (including the reviewer) thought it was close enough to reject, so I tweaked it a bit. I changed the bass and lead synth sounds, and dropped the lead an octave. Hopefully this will do the trick?burpo wrote:Funkytown would not have come to mind, were it not suggested.
