I am wondering if I need to be a member of a PRO. Is it necessary if I do score a deal? I am brand new to the biz, and want to be sure not to leave loose ends.

Are you in USA? If so ASCAP or BMI.
With ASCAP you also have to set up a publishing company (last I Checked)
With BMI you don't (Last I Checked)
