The Girl Who Never Was ©2016 Robert George BMI
Well, she came back for a visit
Spring break in her senior year
Walked around and shook her head at
Landmarks that had disappeared
An internet café had melted
Her childhood skating rink
And a mall bulldozed the tavern
Where the hardhats used to drink
And after ev’ry Friday game
She’d spend hours cruisin’ Main
With her boyfriend in his Chevrolet
There was a perfect make-out spot
Behind the Arby’s parking lot
But her mem’ry wouldn’t look that way
Yet she still could feel his kisses
How his chin was full of soft peach-fuzz
How those nights became a highway
To the girl who never was
She remembered her acceptance
Into Texas A & M
How she left town two weeks early
To prevent who might’ve been
And she saw an empty bird’s nest
Abandoned in the grass
And the tiny, broken eggshells
Gave wings to her past
She’d almost told him that night
When they’d taken one last ride
And shared a final tender, teen-age kiss
She kept it to herself somehow
But she wonders even now
If her choice was also partly his
Her dreams had outgrown that small town
Like ev’rybody’s does
Now they’re mother to the mem’ry
Of the girl who never was
The girl who never was
She’d had too much future waiting
To become a wife
She’d been way too busy livin’
To remember life
Yet she still could feel his kisses
How his chin was full of soft peach-fuzz
How those nights became a highway
To the girl who never was
Her dreams had outgrown that small town
Like ev’rybody’s does
Now they’re mother to the mem’ry
Of the girl who never was
The girl who never was
The girl who never was…
