So all may learn - minimal piano cue
Had this piece returned for following reason:
https://soundcloud.com/davidhollandswor ... l-effect-1
"Nice writing on this piece. The sparseness and tempo are nice, but this is really just a slow piano piece - the introspective thing is nailed for sure, and the reverb on the piano is great - but the arpeggiated left hand gives a motion to the piece that we don't see in the referenced piano tracks. For the most part what we need is simple slow right hand lines with pads underneath instead of left hand work giving the harmonic content."
Not sure how I would have known about the non-arpeggiated left hand... but I guess every detail matters when listening to the alas.
MINIMAL INTROSPECTIVE PIANO INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a fast-growing, NON-Exclusive Music Library for specific placements in documentary-style TV shows. They’re looking for Down-To-Mid-Tempo Cues in the stylistic range of the references below: “At The Air’s Edges” by Mattia Cupelli: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dKDrBwMSxE "301210" by Antonymes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3hmthyFVbo "The Way Home" by Bytheway May (avoid the SFX in this piece): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyuO7jXCJq8 Please send the type of Cues you’d expect to hear in documentary scenes showing poverty-stricken neighborhoods, life on the mean streets, heartbreaking family-based issues, etc., etc., etc. What would play when you see a 12 year-old kid walking alone down a dimly lit, rain-soaked street by because he’s got nowhere else to go? Minimalistic melody and arrangement in minor keys? Check! Down-to-Mid-Tempo? Check! Ethereal sounds and plenty of reverb? Check! Your instrumentation should be pretty sparse and so should your melodies. Solo piano or accompaniment using minimal strings or haunting synth pads or drones could all work under the piano, which should be the featured instrument. Organic instruments should sound like the real deal, with no hint of poor sounding samples or anything that sounds stiff and MIDI-driven. Submissions can range from 60 seconds to 2 minutes in length. Short intros, or no intro at all, good edit points, and non-faded, natural decaying/ring out endings will work best. Do NOT copy or rip off the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for texture, tone, and vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (Great sounding home recordings are fine). This Library offers a NON-EXCLUSIVE deal with a 50/50 split. You’ll get 50% of any applicable sync fees and 100% of the Writer’s share. The Publisher will get 50% of the sync fee and 100% of the Publisher’s share. You must own or control your Master and Copyright. Please submit 1-3 Cues online or per CD no later than 11:59 PM, (PDT), on Saturday, September 24th, 2016. TAXI #D160924IP

Re: So all may learn - minimal piano cue
Hey David — beautiful piece.
But I guess we both need to bone up on what minimalism entails.
I had a piece returned as well.
Gone Astray on my taxi site:
www.taxi.com/hwinckel
The screener's comment was :
"Nice tune, but not so minimal, like the referenced tracks. Minimalism is more (less actually) than just slow solo piano. Nice piece here, but could do with less harmonic movement to match up better with listing calling for minimalist approaches."
Hopefully, the screener's comments on both of our returns will bring us closer to understanding what this kind of listing calls for.

THIS is the sort of context that would be wonderful to see in the actual listing, no?

Re: So all may learn - minimal piano cue
I received a forward and a return for this one. For learning purposes, here is the forward: https://soundcloud.com/paulcroteau/where-are-you-god
Screener comment: "Another nice piece of evocative writing. The heavier reverb here helps the piano sound more like the pianos in the referenced tracks. The darker starker sound is definitely the stronger approach for this listing."
The return comment: "NIce evocative writing here. The piano sounds a bit clunky overall. For this listing we need a more natural sound, and with very little activity overall."
Ironic part, I used the same Logic project for both submittals.

Couldn't agree more, Paul.
Nice job on the forward. You nailed it.
I'd actually like to hear the return.

Re: So all may learn - minimal piano cue
I had two returns for the listing for the same reasons--arpeggiated left hand made it "not minimal."
My problem is that usually I can't convince myself that anyone would pay me to do a sparse melody over a pad. Seems too easy.
+1 Paulie about putting these things in the listing. I wonder if screeners ever write/review the listings? Seems like it would be in everyone's best interest if they wrote exactly what they were looking for.
If anyone is interested, these are the returns:
