I don't know anyone who uses or references "LUFS" just yet, but it's probably a good idea to have K-system and/or EBU-compliant metering with peak and RMS average displayed side by side on a single scale, so you can track crest factor; in a nutshell, adjusting the crest factor is how we control loudness. Another important factor is frequency distribution; balancing the mids and highs against the lows, too much of which can rob your mix of headroom. It's not how loud you make it; it's how you make it loud, and it's easy to overdo-have a listen to The View's new theme, it's a great example of a track pumped so loud you can barely hear it.
