Midnight Rider ©2016 Robert George BMI

Well, I sat down on that Amtrak
In my army uniform
My medals both looked shiny
But my heart was dull and worn
Mountains swallowed up the sunset
As we passed by purple hills
Yeah, the world rolled by my window
But my thoughts stood still

I remembered those I’d rescued
And the freedom I’d helped build
Yet somewhere deep inside me
My soul was stained with guilt
Then we pulled into a station
In some town in Tennessee
A preacher climbed aboard
And sat down next to me

And the midnight rider
Had a distance in his eyes
Like that mystery passenger,
Was a lonely messenger
Who was strong and wise

At first I sat there silent
Then I unlocked my heart
Peace of mind is like a puzzle
And sharing is the biggest part
So I confessed my mem’ries
And the things I used to cope
He said, “Drinking and drugs
Are graves waiting to be dug
And no substitute for hope”

And the midnight rider
Had a distance in his eyes
Like that mystery passenger,
Was a righteous messenger
Who was strong and wise

Moonlight felt like magic fire
Sent to purify my soul
I dozed off when he stopped talkin’
And the night turned black as coal
Well, I woke up right at sunrise
But that preacher man was gone
When I asked the old conductor
He said no one else got on

But the midnight rider
Had a distance in his eyes
Like that mystery messenger,
Was a moonlight passenger
From eternal skies…
