New to the forum. Any thoughts on this genre?

Post by JohnnyP » Wed Nov 16, 2016 6:45 am

:?:
I've written and recorded about 5 or 6 songs in this general style/production and I'm looking for sycnh placements. I've heard it labeled everything from "swamp rock" to unplaceable 90's rock. Any thoughts on this to make it more current/placeable? Thanks!

Good stuff! One Last Drip definitely reminded me of the Stone Temple Pilots. I'm not a strong rock genre guy, but this is certainly placeable, IMHO.

To me it's 90's rock. STP, Pearl Jam-ish

If you want to make it more current pay attention to the drum and guitar sounds of Foo Fighters, Black Keys, Stone Foxes, etc.
Also, study the arrangement and structure of current rock songs.

Hope this helps

Jeff

Hi Johnny P Good!

Always enjoy listening to guitar driven rock...Not much of that left these days. Right now 80's rock seems to be in demand. LOL. Current "rock" songs are structured differently true enough, so if you want that "current vibe" start with your structure. Jeff has provided some great examples to guide you.

Enjoyed all 4, One Last Drip does have an STP vibe and the track is solid start to end and imo, you should be able to find a home for it if that's what you are trying to do. Check the listings.

Keep rock alive!

Thanks Steve. I really apreciate your words, and glad you liked Drip. That was a fun one to write and to play. I'm working on reversing some of the current stuff I hear on Sirius Octane to get some of those song structures in my head.
Thanks again for the advice.

Hi Johnny,

I would agree with all the assessments that this is 90's era rock.

That's not necessarily a bad thing at all. Paulie's right, this is quality music and, as such, is imminently placeable. Don't mess around with updating these tracks. You'll end up with something that's neither fish nor fowl & that is unplaceable. You're just going to have to wait for the right opportunity to show up.

In the meantime, write some more things, try new styles, learn what's out there, study current production techniques...roll up your sleeves & get into it . You don't have to worry about talent. You obviously have that. Put it to work.

Regards,
Mike

Thanks Mike. I was debating whether to update sounds, etc on these tracks but was leaning toward writing new stuff instead. I appreciate the input! Also I noticed on your soundcloud that you have some tracks with Bruce and Chuck. Great stuff!! Maybe I'll see you at the Taxi hang on the 29th.

Stopping by to say welcome, Johnny.

This is not my normal wheelhouse at all, but I like it and it's well cooked.

Michael's right (Michael's always right); don't change anything, write new and wait for the right placement opp to come, which it surely will, at some stage.

Nick
