Turn The Page Back

Post by heckxx » Wed Jan 13, 2010 9:17 pm

Hey everyone! Just finished up another song, this one is called "Turn The Page Back". This one is distinctively not rock, as you can start to tell where my direction of genre is going. Still managed to put guitar in this song though, which is nice.

Anyways, please take a listen, and let me know what you think! I appreciate all comments and criticisms.

Turn The Page Back

[Verse1]
The world is falling faster
And the people aren't fools
Everyone is watching
But I don't know what to do
Earthquakes rumble
And skies all crumble
And we all struggle
To find the truth

Everyone is panicking
And covering their backs
From all the selfish robbers
That continue their attacks
Order loses control
And I'm here alone
To saves our lives and homes

[PreChorus]
And I tried to be perfect
And it wasn't worth it
Cuz nothing is working out this time

[Chorus]
Can I just turn the page back
Forgetting all the problems that we had
Pretending that our promises would last
And I will be a better stronger leader

[Verse2]
I try to take this situation
Under my control
But problems keep arising
In this badly damaged world
Friends to enemies
We will disagree
Violent families
Hearts so cold

[Bridge1]
Ohh
Can we just ignore
The problems of this world
I just can't take this anymore

[Ending]
I'm falling to my knees
I'm failing everything
I never did believe
And God is watching me

I like this Jeff!
Nice synths.. what'd you use on this?

It's quite cathcy, so you nailed the pop, I think.

I wanted a little more drive, though. Thought you could get to the chorus at least 20sec faster, and I was hoping for more intensity in the bridge instead of less.

Was this a mix? I thought it could use a little more 'sizzle', but if you haven't done any mastering at this point, it's a really great sounding mix!

But, other than that, great job. Wouldn't be surprised if this was a forward along the line..

Thanks for the comments, thesongcabinet! All of the pads are Atmosphere, the pianos are Akoustik Piano and Lounge Lizard, and there is a Dimension Pro synth in there as well. Drums are Battery 3. Bass I recorded with a bass guitar.

I did do a quick master to this mix, just so its got that loudness. I'm actually trying to focus less on some of these technical aspects like mastering and eq'ing, and just trying to get the songs to sound great on their own.

I originally had a loud bridge part following the chorus, but to me it started to sound like a boring continuation of the chorus. But maybe I can come up with something different!

Jeff,
I am hearing a more rock version of this tune in my head and it is incredible. If you double the bass line with some distortion guitar, it would really rev things up and be perfect for an ala Maroon 5 listing. Also, since I love big choruses (and TAXI does too), I would try to make your chorus bigger with backing vocals or strings or something. Definitely go the Maroon 5 angle and add those guitars. You know you want to. :)

By the way, I just listened to 2 of your songs on your taxi page. "Photograph" and "Parades In Heaven" are incredible. Love the vocal effect on "Parades...". What program are you using for that?

Speaking of Maroon 5, they do use that heavy bass synth sound in "Makes Me Wonder" that could sound great in the chorus, I'll definitely try something like that.

I use SONAR for all my mixing...for guitar sounds, I generally use Line 6 hardware are software. "Photograph" and "Parades in Heaven" are actually in my garbage bin, of all songs, because I think my vocal performances in those songs are the weakest. They definitely have some great instrumental arrangements, though!

I actually think you vocals sound better in those two songs than in the new one. Please do not scrap those songs. If anything, rerecord your vocals if you are not happy with them. Do not discard those. They are very strong.

Well, I'm not a fan of my old singing voice on "Parades in Heaven", it always sounds so dope-y to me, lol. But many times, I will listen to a really old song and try to bring it back to life again. So we'll see!

This new song is definitely rougher around the edges, since I haven't has as much time to produce it like I did for some old those older songs, where I was finalizing it for a printed CD. I haven't even EQ'ed the vocals yet, for example.

Heck

Like your voice.

Sound was good, but some background hiss was present?

Didn't read the other posts, but this song seems to have a lot of potential.

Liked the bass notes and pattern, but no so much the tone?

Seems like it needs some kick ass in there.

good luck

Paul

Nice and catchy song!
The drums sounded good, the snare is a bit too harsh too in my opinion.
Nice bass sound.
The synth sounds are great as well.
Didn't like the piano sound though, think that sound needs a little work or that you use a better sample.

Thanks for the feedback, Paul, Orest!

I agree that the bass sounds a bit weak; it needs support, perhaps I just need more instruments or stuff going on in the verses to fill up that mostly empty space.

Piano part needs something too; It's not even a piano part that I can play and sing at the same time, since it's timing is really strange. Perhaps I'll make it some synth instrument or something, so that its repetitiveness makes more sense.
