The quote I won't forget was from Dave Walton (to me)...

"Dean, you don't have a drinking problem, you have a Chuck problem."

...see: Chuck Schlacter (at the bar)

;-)

Yeah, I buy a lot of drinks for my friends, and I know I was the most popular person in the lounge, at least with Jennifer, Amanda and Keisha. I possibly made their week, and meeting Amanda's boyfriend who works with the tv and film composer Bear McCreary was priceless. We hung out for four hours or so on Saturday night.

Next year I will most likely be attending a live scoring session for a tv show Bear McCreary scores. How cool would that be.

I only had one goal at my first Rally: buy as many drinks for as many people as I could. I still do that every year and as a networking strategy it still works extremely well. No apology from me.

...since my last "quote" post was a bit of a joke (I hope you knew that ;-) I thought that maybe I should redeem myself by putting up one of the many gems that I heard at the Rally. This is a somewhat paraphrased quote from Ralph Murphy's excellent hit songwriting class:

"What is the main thing that songwriters do when they write a song? They whine, preach and vent. What is the last thing that someone wants to hear on the radio while driving to work in the morning? Whining, preaching or venting."

Michael Lloyd (15 minutes class): "The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your source!"

Jason Brawner (Emotion Magic Class): "Take something small and make it smaller"

Rob Chiarelli (or: Mike Mayer? Rob, I think!) (Hits Pitch Panel): about 'Producing and Dressing up a bad song' - "is like putting lipstick on a pig"

And, "I don't write in the black keys. I'm a guitar player."

Exactly what I was going to say

"Bb?! White keys please"

That was my favorite moment or when he said, "Please, don't tell anyone how easy this is"

We were given permission to write crap - and a lot of it.

Had fun! learned a lot. Thanks ML!

From David Trotter talking about unclear vocal takes at the Film & TV A&R panel :

"Why would you take a bunch of Quaaludes just before you set down to do a vocal take?"

Everyone was thinking it, and he said it.

"Measurable Goals" - Bobby Borg

"You should never want to spend 100% of the money you make." Matt Hirt when asked if people should put any money aside for taxes when they make money from music or is it ok to spend it all. (or words to that effect)

"How many people are here for the crop rotation class?" - David Trotter

"How old are you?" - too many people

"Your vocals are good" - John Breheny - one on one mentoring.

"I saw Catnip Pat looking very adult and very contemporary in the exec lounge last night" - Micheal Laskow introducing Catnip Pat's music.

"I promise there will be single moments this week-end that make you say 'this alone was worth it' " - Catnip Pat while standing in line during Rally Registration - He is a road rally vet and it was my 1st rally

"Workin' the plan" - MOJO

"I am not from Australia!" - Someone from England when I missed identified their accent. (and they already told me they were from England)

"Let's rock this" - Casey H

"We usually throw those people in the pool" - Pre Rally - Dave Watson

"We should all stay in touch" - Anj
