Post Re: music on my website - a PRO question
Martijn, are you sure they are not just asking for the right to administer your performance rights? That's what a PRO does (Performing Rights Organization). This is their site, right? http://www.bumastemra.nl/en/about-bumas ... anisation/

Buma has 20.000 members, and you are probably pretty fresh in understanding the law terms in the music business. I understand there's a case of possible fraud, but they should have explicit rules like any other PRO have. Call them up and have someone at their office explain the terms for you.

I'm pretty certain it is a misunderstanding. You give your PRO the right to administer your performance rights, which is what you want them to do.

I suggest getting a solid source to interpret the terms you encounter. Like this one http://www.routledge.com/books/details/9780415995351/

I'm sure a case of possible fraud can make you suspicious, but make sure you understand the terms involved also. If you are sure of that, and are not happy with what they can do for you, you can join any other pro in the EU (it's a free choice, across borders).

Thank you Magne, for being so thorough!

You're right, I think. But the email from Buma stated " By joining Buma/Stemra you give your performance rights in the hands of Buma/Stemra". This is a literally translated. I think, after reading what you wrote, that you absolutely right. It's probably due to communication by email that misinterpretations like these occur. I'll give them a call ;)

Best,
Martijn
