Post Returned - Not quite broadcast quality
I just had a return for a Y Listing so critique was not provided. It did have a one liner for reason which was "Not quite broadcast quality, a little 'dark' in mood". I agree the mood is a little dark.
But the broadcast quality comment has me confused.

The track was submitted to

Y120113TV
Cable Network Music Supervisor needs a CONTEMPORARY, INSPIRING, HIGH ENERGY INDIE ROCK SONG **or** INSTRUMENTAL TRACK for the MAIN TITLE on a new Reality Show on a large cable network.

ALL submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS by the Music Supervisor HERSELF

Listener ID # 326

I would appreciate it if I could get other people's opinion since I'm not hearing the problem in my headphones or monitors. Are my ears just getting old?

Song is "Work In Time"

Welcome David,

I actually agree with you! :)

I'd just high-pass-filter a few of your tracks and widen the mix a little, but it's quite good (as is) to my ears.

Nice track! Good vibe.

I'm certainly no expert, but if I were to point out
spots that could be strengthened, they would be these;

The groove seems to go in an out of the pocket.
The individual sonic elements seem a little thin,
preventing the track to feel cohesive. Some
compression and perhaps a smidge of chorus could
help thicken your stew.

Funny. I didn't find it that dark. It just had drive,
to my ears any way.

Good work!!

Hi David, I feel I can help here!

is the reason the song was

.. for that listing!

I have come to learn that the term "Broadcast Quality" does not always relate to production/mixing, and it can differ listing to listing and be many things like lyrics , structure, vibe etc too.

"Broadcast Quality" can be different for different listings , think of it as more of a general term, "quality enough to be broadcast on this project'

I hope I didn't confuse more! Hope others are be able to confirm too

I like the tune btw!

Hi
Can't comment on the BQ with these speakers here but I do think it's not upbeat, exciting, and energetic enough for THIS listing. I might not call it "dark" (or at least not very dark) but definitely not "inspiring" enough.

This was screened by the music sup herself, so she obviously didn't feel it was what she was looking for.

I mentioned on another thread how nice it was that this supervisor, who screened as #326, took the time to give us a comment as to why a track didn't work for her. You can't ask for much more that that!! 8-) A listen by the music sup herself and feedback. That's pretty awesome. :D

Don't sweat it. See how it fairs with other submissions, make BQ adjustments per P2P feedback if needed, etc.

;) Casey

All thanks for your comments and suggestions.

Stuart - I have not tried widening the mix yet. Might help.

Burpo - additional compression might work. I could also cut out the some of the triangle. I think it might be what made it feel out of pocket at times.

Sedge - Makes sense if Broadcast Quality also means not good enough for this production

Casey - I do appreciate that the listener left a comment. I was just thrown by the phrase "Broadcast Quality". I understand phrases like "Not Inspiring" or "Music" but have not had a return due to "Broadcast Quality". For me the difference is "Not Broadcast Quality" implies mix needs to be cleaned up.

Again. Thanks to all who have responded to this post.

- Dave
