 Re: Question About Self Licensing
So far, I think you've gotten some good advice and ideas.
The main thing with the smaller projects like this is building a resume. I'd probably let him have the first two or three for free.... with credits of course. If he keeps coming back then a fee would be appropriate. Make sure that on the very first one he understands that there will be a fee "if this works out well for both of us".....
Be sure to sign the license agreement on a Per project basis regardless of the remuneration, or lack thereof.
I wrote a song last year that fit well (or so I thought) into the mission of teen pregnancy counseling organizations. I played it for a local women's center director and she went ape over it... loved the song! When we discussed allowing them to use it she was excited and she even said it would work well in their fundraiser events at churches. I agreed.
Then we discussed the license fee..... bang...slammed into a brick wall. I was asking a very reasonable amount.... a couple hundred dollars ($250) to license it for a full year, with allowance for video sync and audio usage. At a normal fund raiser in a church they will normally raise $10,000 or more in a single night at a reasonably sized church's event. I know because they came to my church every year and we supported them and the amount raised was mentioned from the platform.
End of the story, after discussing with my co-writer, we decided to allow them to use it for a year at no cost. Signed the license with them.
I just found out their big banquet, the biggest one of the year at a really large local church..... tables are $125 donation and each person also pays a certain amount to get in, and then they have a pledge drive on top of that...... Since I know the director, I just asked if they were planning to use the song...... (are you setting down?) .... she said "No they were not planning to play it".
Huh?
But I can still say I have a licensed song...... FWIW....
The song: Give Me A Chance is on my sound click site if you'd like to hear it. On my web site> My Music> scroll down.
