If you're using orchestral virtual instruments, it's a very good thing to have at least one 88-note controller, so that you can do key-switching, which is a method of swapping out different articulations of the same instrument, usually for the sake of increased realism.

Re: MIDI Keyboards.... recommendations ? what do you use?
Ok, it's been about 3 years since anyone posted to this topic, which means there's a whole new generation of keyboard workstations out there. My old Roland died a couple of years back, and I think I've procrastinated long enough in finding a replacement. I'm looking for something versatile, with good bang for the buck. I don't intend to take it gigging, so weight isn't an issue. It just has to do the job in the studio. I prefer something with piano-like feel, but I think price will drive me to semi-weighted keys. Here are the boards I'm considering:
Korg Kross 61, 73 or 88
Korg Krome 61 or 73 (the 88 is probably out of my price range, unless it's a restock or a blemished item)
Yamaha MOXF6 61 (ditto the 88)
Roland FA-06 61
Yamaha MX-61
Any feedback on them or any other board in that general ballpark would be helpful.
Thanks!

I use an Akai Pro LPK25. Just 25 keys. Less is more. thats all you need to write your pop hit.
