Interesting article on the problem with singers today

Post by remmet » Fri Feb 11, 2011 3:22 pm

This is the best article I've seen on the overuse of a certain vocal style that seems to have permeated the pop world for quite a while.

Yup, couldn't agree more. Too often it's all about "me, me, me" and the song is just a vehicle for attention which, to me, is upside down. Nice post...

great article.

how soundly you failed, made an anthem all fright . . ."

Inspiring! Maybe instead of kvetching, I'll pick up a mic and work up a version, in case I should need to lip-sync it at some point. ;)

I dunno, I've always found Christian Augilera an awesome singer and performer. People never really liked virtuoso musicians, wether it's guitarists or singers. They challenge the ears too much, and doesn't feel comfortable to listen to, but that doesn't really bother me. The most popular performers has often been those regular people could mirror themselves in. Bing Crosby, Elvis, Tony Bennett ect. sings like each and every one of us.

So, the virtuoso's may be overperforming and egocentric from time to time, yet I still feel there's a place for that too. And bottom line is, both Van Halen and Augilera sells tons of records and have become multimillionaires, so I'm not the only one (actually, Zappa shredded from time to time too, as the virtuoso guitarist he was, when he wasn't pickin up underwear on stage 8-) , like on "Muffin Man" - one of my fave's).

It may go out of style, though, like the 80'ies shredders, and maybe that's what's happening with Augilera & co, now?

Yeah, Christina Aguilera is very good at the vocal gymnastics, she can usually pull off just about anything, because she's so accurate and she commits to every note, no matter how many she crams into a syllable, but her performance at the Superbowl was godawful. I'm sure she'll do better next time, if there is a next time. Considering that it's the toughest song to sing, particularly a capella, and the most high pressure gig in this hemisphere, I can chalk it up to nerves and forgive her, but I know a lot of Americans won't; it's our National Anthem, and a lot of people take it very seriously. Some folks are still boycotting Roseanne Barr. All that aside, just about every VH1 Divas concert (contest?) has been cringe-worthy. Jerry Wexler was right.

Maybe she was only alloted so much time to sing the national anthem, and had to edit the song to fit into the time frame, lol!

Oversouling is probably great for a vocal warmup or exercise, probably better than ya ha ha ha ha, but whoever thought it should be the main performance? Otoh, oversouling vowels or the do re mi probably sounds better than butchering actual lyrics and trashing their context.
