Is this production music – advertising music ?
Hello all,
So, I’m trying something a little different. The song is called “Neon Martini”. (on my Taxi)
It is a mere 30 seconds.
Would you say this is production music? More specifically, is this something you could hear in an ad for cars or snowboards or something similar?

Hi
I think it needs work. I see a certain appeal with it's simplicity, and I kinda like it when the guitar begins but the drums sound mechanical and I think the melody is dated. I notice that with most commercials now, they have less 'melody' than 'feel'. Ya know? a groove

It sounds dated to me too - has a Jan Hammer Miami Vice era vibe to my ear. Might fit in a retro listing.

Thanks for the listen guys!
I did set out to make a throw-back 007 vibe BUT I did not set out to make it sound like I opened a time capsule.
What would either of you say is a "modern day" chord progression?

I agree, I kinda like it when the guitar comes in. When I look at the melodic rhythm, after reading the comments about it sounding retro... it is syncopated, I realize. notes come in on the 'and', and takes a few measures to state. That doesn't distinguish it by itself, but since this track has a dance vibe to it, I'm thinking make the melody have more rhythmic activity, even doing one melody in half the time, whatever melody you do choose. I mean, a lot of electronic music has syncopated elements as being central. Seems like advertising music is often in a major key, and happy, or comical. This track is like a cross between drama and electronic dance to me... and it seems like you could morph it one direction or the other. Tossing in the .0005¢ from here.

WHy do I hear the potential for a LAdy Gaga-ish kind of takeoff with this thing. For the record I can't ever seem to get away with the 16th note hi hat thing, particularly if it sounds quantized and as forward in the mix as this does. Always get that "drums sound mechanical" or "too machine like" thing. It sounds like a candidate as an intro for more modern four on the floor dance sort of thing. Hope this helps in some way.

hey Mike,
there is the forums opinion, and then there is your opinion based on research.
I would go find 20 new ads that are either cars or sports related, and listen to the music. If you can honestly hear your piece among them, then its is got a shot - just finish it and get it in a library or similar.
if you listen with some detachment and you can say that your piece doesn't fit those bits of music that actually made it into the ad, then that's your answer.

Thanks Pboss!
Chuck: interesting. I actually consider it "done" with potential of modification based on feedback but for a quick jingle. - If you want to have a go at it to be something longer like a gaga ... let me know
Andy: That is a fantastic idea. Something I should have started with...

Hi Mike!
Stretching into something different is always good.
This sounds pretty good to me, definitely an 80's feel.
Cheers -Rob
