Lonely ©2013 Robert George BMI

Past the birch grove and a patch of berries
Is a one-plot meadow cemetery
Out there ev’ry shadow is a phantom
And they ride the rolling hills in tandem

Hope is slipping but I’m holding onto it
As I let this crucifix become a conduit
Or is faith a slick veneer…a thin façade
Cos the Good Lord travels incognito and He lives abroad

Some men say the stars are just a night school
Teaching us that life crawled from a tide pool
But if my choices felt my Maker’s presence
It would rob my conscience of its essence

Yet sometimes belief is ripped and rent by truth
Other times in shards of faith I’ve found a shred of proof
And there is no alibi for doubting God
Just because he visits incognito and He works abroad

Others say that death is just another dawn
And they try to pass it off as passing on
As if there’s a heaven…as if there’s a hell
As if time’s a shore collecting empty shells

But we share our lives with those we’ve cared for
Then they’re gone and we wish that we’d shared more
So I’ve often whispered to the shadow
Painted by the tombstone in the meadow

Faith is slipping but I’m holding onto it
As I let this crucifix become a conduit
And though my old friend is buried ‘neath the sod
I believe he visits incognito and he lives abroad

And I’m sometimes followed by a shadow
When I leave the tombstone in the meadow…
