West Coast Songwriter Competition

The Competition is tonight at the Freight and Salvage. Sign up 6:45 to 7:30, performance at 7:30. Judges are:Janice Maxie Ried - jazz pianist and vocalist and vocal coach. Mark Weiss - has a management company for artists and is an event/concert promoter. Mark Stein - has a recording studio and produces.Tonight and July are the last opportunities to compete for the Playoffs. I'm ecstatic to announce that our judges for the Playoffs on August 3rd are STEVE SESKIN and ANDRE PESSIS.It will be one of the last shows at the famous venues. Last event of the West Coast Songwriter Competition season for the East Bay is tonight. The judges are Michael Edell (President of West Coast Songwriters), Greg Lamboy (performing songwriter and WCS board member) and Steven Suen (owner of Biscuits and Blues).

Gah ....it takes ten to fifeteen hours at the recording studio to produce a good song. Better to spend three hours digging ditches than get a taste of three hours of studio time.le Hook

But since this is a singer-songwriter competition, most people use the time to record one song, often the song that won. It's usually one singer and one instrument and the performance is well-prepared. About half hour to get the sound right. An hour for doing multiple takes of the song. Then an hour and a half to edit, mix and burn it to CD. Pretty easy actually. I'd say most people don't even care about winning a prize, they just want to move on to the Playoffs and a shot at the Finals.

Monday 8/3/09 will be the the West Coast Songwriter Competition Playoffs, where the Best Song winner from each month during the year will compete for Best Song of the year. It will be held at 7:30 at Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison st, Berkeley). The judges will be Steve Seskin (Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, 7 number one hits, etc) and Andre Pressis (Bonnie Raitt, Waylon Jennings, Huey Lewis, etc). Hope you can come by, it's worth the 5 dollar ticket just to hear Steve Seskin do a couple songs.

The Playoffs turned out great. The winning song was Scarecrow by Mike McNevin, a song that deserves the recognition. It was the last event WCS will have at the Freight & Salvage after many years. Wow, been really out of touch with posting. Meanwhile, the competition is still going strong. Last night there were 3 judges, 2 producers from a production company and a music director of a radio station. Next competition is May 24th. If you're in the East Bay, it's worth checking out the new Freight and Salvage, world-class venue.

Tonight was the WCS Grand Finals at the Freight. There'll be pics and info on the WCS site. Last Monday was the Berkeley Playoffs. The competition in Berkeley is over until October (third Monday every month). WCS is having their annual conference Sept 10-12 in Los Altos (near Stanford University). I'll be at the Road Rally too, as usual, looking forward to seeing a lot of you there.
