$240,000.00 Commercial question.

Post by DavidSJH » Fri Jan 25, 2019 11:10 am

Maybe this is a crazy question but if the Add agency has $240K to spend on a commercial why don't they just use the song they used as a reference? :P

Ya This seems a bit far fetched.

Maybe the temp track is owned by someone who no longer (or never) wants to be associated with the commercial.

Has to be something unusual going on for a general call

I think we're all wondering the same :D

Could it be they added some zeros by mistake?

I just submitted a song of mine and I'm hoping and praying they like it ;)

cause $240,000 might not be enough.

Remember there are two sides to a master as well.

The writer (who might be the artist as well) receives the Sync portion
The master owner (who also might be the artist but usually is the record company the artist is affiliated with) gets the Master Use portion.

These fees don't have to be the same as its not a 50/50% split - and since record companies are in the business of making money......

These days since there is so much independently produced music these two sums are often included in the same "sync / master use license" and its a lot lower than $240,000.

Sheryl Crow licensed "every day is a winding road" to Subaru for somewhere around $500,000. I am not sure what she got and what the record company got out of that.

There is a possibility they don't want people watching the advert and going 'oh its that Birdy song I love'. Could take attention away from their product.
