60's Groovy Hipster Cocktail Party

Post by jazzstan » Mon Sep 19, 2011 1:38 pm

For those who are considering this listing and have read the details, I know it says "... mid-tempo mellow grooves.." and "... NOT Cocktail Jazz..."
I know that Bop was very much part of jazz of that era, yet my gut reaction is that my tune:

Hard Bop 180 at http://www.taxi.com/jazzstan

is too far "off target" to bother to submit. Yet, part of me says well, yeah maybe but ya never know... !?!

What d'y'all think? On or off target? Submit or not?

Hi Jazzstan,

I had to do a little digging to find the listing you're referring to. It's helpful if you include it in your original post(s). Here it is:
AUTHENTIC 1960s-SOUNDING GROOVY, HIPSTER, COCKTAIL PARTY SONGS and/or INSTRUMENTALS with PSYCHEDELIC, FUNK and JAZZ INFLUENCES needed by busy Film/TV publisher for a new TV series about beautiful swingers rockin' it in the era of Peace and Love. For Funk, think METERS and BOOKER T. For Psychedelic, think DONOVAN to ERIC BURDEN. For Jazz, think HORACE SILVER ("Song for My Father") and LEE MORGAN ("The Sidewinder".) This is about the swanky set chillin' with the highball on the bean bag or gettin' it on in the grotto, so keep your INSTRUMENTALS and/or VOCAL SONGS mid-tempo with mellow grooves. Use only REAL INSTRUMENTS (NO SYNTHS!) Lyrics, if any, should be consistent with the 60s era and generally positive. The overriding tone should be laid back, elegant and drug-friendly. Publisher is NOT looking for Lounge music, Cocktail Jazz or hardcore Funkadelic, but downtempo, period-specific grooves from the soulful, to the Latin-influenced, to the sitar-groovy that immediately evoke the time period. You must own 100% of your composition and recording. Broadcast quality (excellent home recordings are fine) only. Please submit one to three songs and/or instrumentals online or per CD, include lyrics (if applicable.) All submissions will be screened BY THE PUBLISHER on a YES/NO BASIS ONLY - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than Thursday, September 22, 2011. TAXI #Y110922HC
I'm certainly not a jazz expert and I'm most definitely not an expert on deciphering Taxi's listings. However when I listen to the referenced Horace Silver and Lee Morgan examples and compare to yours, they don't sound all that different in general feel to me. I will say there are a lot more horns in both examples given. However in the Horace Silver song, they do drop out in the middle and let the guitar take the lead for awhile. So maybe if you could work in some horns in yours? That's the main difference I hear. Your call whether to submit or not though. Personally I usually submit when I'm on the fence and just prepare myself for a return. Especially when it's one of these Y/N, no critiques one. However this is the publisher themselves so that's another variable to consider. Don't know if any of this is helpful or not. Hopefully. Thanks. - Roger Gilpin

Nice playing and track.

Different people will have different opinions and ideas about what part of the 60s music was hip. This certainly could fit for placement in the described TV series but less well with the list description.

Perhaps it would help to get through the screening by giving it another name, or is that cheating.?
'60s Hip Bop'?

To me "I remember Mickey" would make sense -as the tune reminds me of some of the exercises in Mickey Baker I ( The guitar book)

The listing seems to indicate bouncy rhythms to me from the examples, I would say Eric Burden's "Spill the Wine" with War and less of Eric Burdon and the Animals is probably more of what they might be looking for as far as Eric Burdon is concerned. If bop means bebop, I thought that was from an earlier period, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker type of jazz? I think your jazz song sounds more contemporary or closer to smooth jazz, but I really don't know squat about jazz, more questions than answers. I also thought bebop was more pushed than laidback? They mentioned funk, but not too funk like say a Parliament.
