A damp and moldy London basement flat

Post by MattCurious » Sat Mar 11, 2017 5:47 am

I finally got this to work!

Inspired by some of the more humble setups on the site, I thought I'd share mine.

The room is a small, dense-walled, poorly-ventilated, mold-ridden spare room in a basement flat in London, UK (the window is about eye-level with the pavement / sidewalk).

I've basically given up on it as a monitoring environment (hence the clutter / giant rubber duck around the speakers).

Software:

Pro Tools 12
Komplete Ultimate 10
iZotope Ozone 7
Altiverb 7

(The last two were complete game-changers)

Hardware:

Alesis iO2
Yamaha HS50M monitors (never used because of the room)
Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros (heavily relied on because of the room! Plus an assortment of ear buds and other headphones for comparisons)
A fairly powerful PC but I forget the specs
Goodmans grotbox (under the rubber duck)
There's also a Samson CO1 condenser mic and one of those portable vocal-booths-on-a-stand but I don't often get to use them.

Instruments:

Yamaha DTX 450K electronic drum kit routed into the Alesis (manually play drums and orchestral percussion in as MIDI then play with samples)
Oxygen49 keyboard (via Alesis)
US Fender Strat, no idea years and so on - had it for about 20
Fender Squire Jazz bass
Gibson SG Gothic Special (from my Nu Metal days  )
Limited edition Dean ML X (a wedding gift)
Generic Fender acoustic

Oh, and the slightly sinister "Trust Us" poster is from Roger Waters' tour of The Wall in 2011

Looking great, Matt! I'm sure your rubber duckie appreciates the damp environment :)

LOL, Dan - I hadn't even thought of that! It's a running joke between me and my brother that the duck (inexplicably named Kurt) is the brains of the operation.

Whatever works is good enough, and besides, I've seen worse Matt - my own, for example :) Its dry, but a small 3rd bedroom that's ram-jam full of far too much and rarely used accumulated music gear. Despite selling quite a lot in several loads to a local music store late last year, I absolutely MUST have a serious sale of the rest.

Pro Tools 12
Komplete Ultimate 10
iZotope Ozone 7
Altiverb 7

So, is Ozone 7 working well for you? I'm assuming you have standard or advanced versions? I bought the Elements version, but I'm still not sure about it (too little control over the very few broad-brush parameters you have access to, whilst there are few clues about what processing is being applied in the various presets, so I might stumble on a good result but learn nothing about mastering). I was seriously considering upgrading to the standard version in the March sale at Plugin Boutique, so I'd be interested in what you think about it.

Thanks, guys!

Graham - I have the standard version of Ozone 7; I don't use the presets so much as play with the individual parameters: exaggerating them and then reining them in to suit.

Even with my recent changes in mix technique, the difference Ozone makes is astonishing when you A/B it in and out of the mix.

I downloaded the Standard demo and its so much better having control of the parameters. I haven't even tried the presets yet, as I've enjoyed working with all the components myself. I'll definitely upgrade from Elements to Standard.
Thanks very much for the recommendation Matt.

Happy to help if I can. The engineer that recommended it to me called it a "sound-good-erizer"

Cool setup! Everything nice and handy. My gear is stashed all over my apartment. +1 on Ozone 7. That software is definitely a game changer. Thanks for posting the photo!

Nice setup Matt. At least you have a window. I like my room but there is no window in this part of my basement.
