A forward & a great critique!

Post by billg » Tue Aug 14, 2007 9:49 am

Well, after some encouraging words from forum members I submitted my song SugarJones for the recent "beach-rock" listing. Got a forward & a fantastic critique. Wasn't really sure at all about it being appropriate for the listing but the screener added " perfect listing match" to the comments. If not for you guys who "juiced" me up a bit I'm not sure I would have submitted it . . . .soooo THANKS! -billg-

Woo Hoo! Congrats, Bill. You know how I feel about "Sugar Jones." You ought to post the link for it (if you want to) so people can hear once again how great it is. "Sugar Jones" will be going places! I've always thought you had a hit on your hands.

Congrats billg on your forward!I submitted to the same listing but so sad mine was returned. I really thought this song was right up that alley. The screener said :"Thank you for sharing your song, I appreciate the opportunity to screen it. The lyrics deliver a nice "feel good" emotion thats signature for "Beach Rock" music. The title is good and makes for a strong hook, but I think it repeats a little too much, consider changing the phrasing a bit for less repetition. The synth horn is too mechanical and fake sounding, replace it with natural instrumentation. This song has a good foundation, some minor adjustments could make it very marketable, especially in this type of category. "now I am in the process of re-recording this song. I am really going to miss my synth horns, I didn't realize they were that bad!I would love to share this tune with the board and get some feedback and suggestions from some of you.the song is called "We'll Go Dancin'" and it is posted here at http://www.marcblackwellmusic.com/start.html just launch the audio player and it's the first song.thanks,Marc

Hi Marc, I really like the "island" feel of "We'll Go Dancing", very beachy. As a matter of fact I think it really was pretty much on target for the listing. That said, I do think the horns sound pretty fake . . . I wouldn't have been sure they were supposed to be horns if it hadn't been mentioned. Heck, you could probally just loose them & not replace them with anything & it would be fine. I wasn't sure my song was right for the listing but I had kinda of G-Love thing in mind when I wrote it & this listing mentions G-Love as one of the "ala" groups so I figured if I didn't submitt for this I would probably never have another opp. Screener comments include " very comparable to G-Love & Special Sauce" so I just got lucky on this one. Now if only the listing party would think it was perfect for the listing also! -billg-
