Aint Stupid Enough - Country
Any comments would be appreciated. Contemporary country ala Randy Houser.
Here is a rough worktape:

Aint Stupid Enough (to Take You Back)
(c) 2006 Walt Lamberg and Alan Lamberg
Verse 1
Drove by your favorite café, thought about that night.
We had a pleasant dinner, then another pointless fight.
Sat alone in that park where we spent a Sunday afternoon.
A little bit of happiness ended way too soon.
You could be so loving one moment,
Then steal all that loving back.
I may be dumb enough to still want you,
But I aint stupid enough to take you back.
Verse 2
Went to that country dance club, seemed to see you everywhere.
One woman wore that dress you like; one had your color hair.
Guy she was with shot me a glance, “Bud, how long you gonna stare?”
My friends just shook their heads, like “how can you still care?”
You could be the night’s brightest star,
Then color my morning black.
I may be dumb enough to still want you,
But I aint stupid enough to take you back.
Bridge
You played too many games; your luck has had its run.
The breaking up got too easy; making up stopped being fun.
I finally figured out, where you were coming from.
Somebody hurt you bad, and you want to spread the pain around.
Verse 3
Came home, checked my messages, heard you say, “Please call me.”
Erased it, poured myself a tall one, watched TV.
Couldn’t push those words out of my mind, no matter how hard I tried.
Thought of all those things you said, and all the times you lied.
You could make me feel I won it all,
Then play your Queen to my sad Jack.
I may be dumb enough to still want you,
But I aint stupid enough to take you back.

Hi
I really like the lyrics. I think the vocals could use a bit of work, sounded a bit off pitch in places.
The music does need to be a little more contemporary and it may be able to do so by becoming a faster song. That's how I "hear" it when I read the lyrics.

Michelle,
Thanks for listening and for your comments. I was concerned that the tempo might be too slow. And I could probably do a better vocal at a better tempo.

Hi Walt,
First off the lyrics are fantastic! The song works lyrically from start to finish. Don't you dare change a word of that. I personally think the way it is right now it would fit perfectly on Bob Dylan's next album. It really is that good, I actually think of classic 60's Dylan when i hear you performing it. And if you asked me if classic 60's Dylan music is still relevant today I'd say "You bet it is".
I've been watching you grow for awhile now Walt and this time you really tapped into something special. In my opinion I wouldn't change anything about this song. I think you should have it cut in the studio professionally just the way it is. You need to find a bluesy old timer to sing it. You could pitch this to Willie Nelson, that's another voice that I could see supporting these lyrics.
Great job on this one, don't you dare mess with it to much you could do more harm than good.

Glen,
Thanks very much for your comments. I am a big fan of 60s Dylan. I used to play and sing a lot of his songs, knew a lot by heart. I put a lot of work into this one, would be reluctant to change anything, unless someone comes up with a terrific suggestion.

Walt, I also like the lyrics, especially the hook. You remind me of Mississippi John Hurt. I always imagine him when I hear you.
